Growing Up Between Worlds 🇸🇻🇺🇸

What does it mean to grow up Salvadoran-American?
In the latest episode of Cultura Talks, brothers Ricardo and Ray Archila talk about growing up Salvadoran American, and how their very different childhoods shaped the way they saw themselves.

From being mistaken for Mexican and being told “you’re American,” to reconnecting with Salvadoran art, music, food, and community, this is a personal conversation about identity, belonging, and finding your way back to your roots.

Maybe we’re not supposed to choose one. Maybe we’re meant to have a hybrid heart.

Fall in love with the process, not just the result. 🇸🇻
That was one of my biggest takeaways from this conversation with Salvadoran rapper FEEFA at Noche de Herencia Salvadoreña Gala.

Feefa has been making music and putting in the work for almost a decade—and he’s still hungry, still showing up, still performing, and most importantly, still grateful that he gets to do this.

I’ve gotten to witness a small piece of that journey myself. Over the years, I’ve photographed Feefa, documented him performing at different Salvadoran community events, shot Polaroids with him, and watched the evolution happen in real time.

So getting to finally share the stage with him and celebrate what we’ve both been building was special.
Because the older I get, the more I realize there isn’t some magical finish line where suddenly you’ve “made it.”

You make the music.
You shoot the film.
You play the show.
You tell the story.
You fail sometimes.
You learn.
And then you wake up and do it again.

You have to fall in love with the process.

And nights like Noche de Herencia remind me why creating our own spaces matters, too.

We don’t have to wait for somebody else to validate our artists. We can build our own stages, celebrate our own talent, create our own institutions, and give people their flowers while they’re here to receive them.

FEEFA summed it up better than I ever could:
“Some motherf**kers have Grammys. I have a Curtido TV award.” 😂🇸🇻

And you know what? That s**t means something!

Much love to Feefa for continuing to grind, and to and everyone behind Noche de Herencia for creating a space where our community can celebrate each other.

Keep creating. Keep showing up. Fall in love with the process. The rest will come. 🇸🇻

It’s rooted in our traditions, but shaped by the experiences of growing up in the United States.

You can see it in the art.
You can watch it on screen.

And maybe most importantly, we’re finding each other and building a community around the culture we’re creating.

That’s how Pedro Gomez approaches drumming.

For Pedro, the drum is a communication tool. Through call and response, rhythm becomes a conversation—one that anyone can participate in.

For more than 25 years, Pedro has studied, performed, and taught percussion across different musical traditions and communities. Along the way, he’s discovered that rhythm can do more than create music. It brings people together.

Our community drumming classes with free and open to everyone. You don’t need experience. You don’t need to know how to play. You don’t even need to bring a drum.

Just bring yourself, a playful spirit, and an openness to learn something new.

Pedro Gomez Pedro Gomez is a drummer, educator, artist, and community builder who has spent more than 25 years studying, performing, and teaching percussion.

His journey with rhythm began at 13 in San Francisco’s Mission District and has taken him around the world, learning from master percussionists and exploring traditions ranging from Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms to cumbia, salsa, and beyond.

Through his work with 🥁BATUKI🥁, Pedro has dedicated himself to using rhythm, movement, and music as tools for connection, learning, and community.

Pedro brings that experience to Morelos Hall in South San Francisco through our free community drumming classes.

It’s always great catching up with Ligia La Del Sombrero Azul. She has helped create the soundtrack and the vibe in so many Salvadoran households, and her music brings back so many memories.

It was fun talking with her about artistry, the evolution of art, and how Salvadoran cumbia is now being discovered and embraced by people from other cultures. There’s something special about seeing music that has been part of our lives for generations find new audiences.
