There will always be another option.

Another venue.

Another dress.

Another photographer.

Another Pinterest idea.

That doesn’t mean you need it.

DECIDE → DOCUMENT → MOVE FORWARD.

Make the informed choice.

Remember why you chose it.

Then enjoy moving on.

What decision are you still researching even though you’ve basically already made it?

The Courage to Begin Again

Military families don’t just leave addresses behind. Sometimes they leave people who became family.

Some goodbyes happen because life changes.

Military families often say goodbye because duty calls.

PCS orders can tell a family where they’re going next. What they cannot capture is everything that family may be leaving behind.

The neighbor who became family.

The friend who knew when something was wrong without asking.

The classmates who transformed an unfamiliar school into somewhere a child finally belonged.

The people around a dinner table who, somewhere along the way, stopped being new friends and simply became your people.

Then come the boxes.

And another goodbye.

Military families learn something difficult: you can know a relationship may eventually be separated by geography and still allow yourself to love those people deeply.

That isn’t weakness.

That’s courage.

Starting over doesn’t mean the people you left behind mattered any less.

It means finding the courage to make room for new people, too.

Resilience isn’t pretending goodbye doesn’t hurt. Sometimes it means missing someone while remaining willing to introduce yourself to somebody new.

Military spouses do it.

Military children do it.

Service members do it.

Hello again.

A new school again.

A new neighborhood again.

A new community again.

And eventually, something changes.

Someone remembers your name.

A child mentions a new friend.

An invitation arrives.

Strangers become neighbors.

Neighbors become friends.

And occasionally, friends become family.

None of that replaces the people left behind.

It simply makes the story larger.

Military life has a remarkable way of scattering relationships across a map while proving that some of them can survive the miles.

And photographs help preserve those chapters.

Years later, a photograph can return us to the people who filled a particular house, celebrated a birthday, stood beside us during a difficult season, or made an unfamiliar place feel like home.

So today’s Military Monday honors everyone who has looked back with gratitude while somehow finding the courage to move forward.

To trust again.

To belong again.

To begin again.

If you’ve lived military life, who is someone you met along the way who became family?

Yesterday, Shaunte and Demetrius married at Earle Brown Heritage Center, Brooklyn Center, Minnesota in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.

Approximately 150 family members and friends joined their indoor ceremony. We made portraits in the garden, they took a little time for a private cake cutting, and their speeches and toasts were very personal. Everybody was dressed to impress, but the day never felt like it was performing for the camera.

That matters to me.

Preparation should make a wedding feel easier for the couple, not more managed. Professional cameras, lighting, organized equipment, and backup readiness let me make decisions quietly while the day keeps moving.

Stacy and Donovan, thank you for helping ensure Shaunte and Demetrius’s day was incredible—and for making my work as their photographer easier and more fun.

READY FOR WHAT CAN’T BE REPEATED.

Preparation is part of the art.

WEDDING TIP WEDNESDAY™ | NO. 06

MAKE TIME FOR WHAT MATTERS.

You can create the perfect wedding timeline…

and still miss your wedding.

Because being there isn’t necessarily the same as being present.

Stephen R. Covey said:

“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”

So here’s today’s question:

Stop asking, “How do we fit everything into the day?”

Start asking, “What deserves a place in our day?”

Pick three to five things you’d genuinely miss if they disappeared.

Your first look.

Grandma.

Cocktail hour.

Sunset.

Dinner together.

Dancing.

Ten quiet minutes when nobody needs anything from you and you can simply say:

We’re married.

Build around those.

Then leave enough recoverable time for real life to happen without sacrificing them.

Because sometimes running a few minutes behind isn’t the wedding going wrong.

Sometimes…

that’s the wedding happening.

Save this for timeline-planning day. 🤍

And send it to the person you’re marrying with one question:

What are the three moments we refuse to rush?

Some heroes never wear a uniform.

Military children grow through constant change with extraordinary courage.

New schools.

New friends.

New beginnings.

Again and again.

To every military child:

Thank you for reminding us that courage has no age requirement.

✨ WEDDING TIP WEDNESDAY ✨

The fastest way to become overwhelmed?

Trying to decide who to trust.

Every vendor looks incredible.

Every review sounds amazing.

Every decision feels permanent.

Kristine and I experienced the same thing while planning our own wedding—even after photographing more than 1,300 weddings.

That’s why we created Wedding Tip Wednesday.

Clarity creates confidence. Confidence creates peace.

Save this for later and tag someone who’s planning a wedding.

The biggest surprise in wedding planning isn’t usually the budget…

It’s realising you’re planning two completely different weddings.

💍 Different priorities don’t create conflict.

❤️ Hidden expectations do.

Before making another wedding decision this week, try this.

Without discussing it first…

Each of you write down the three things that matter most on your wedding day.

Now compare them.

You might discover your biggest breakthrough isn’t choosing a venue.

It’s understanding each other.

After photographing more than 1,300 weddings, I’ve learned that the strongest marriages don’t begin with perfect agreements.

They begin with meaningful conversations.

Beautiful wedding photography is not created by controlling every moment.

It is created by knowing which moments require direction—and which require trust.

Susanna and Eric celebrated an intimate ceremony beneath Minneapolis’ iconic Heffelfinger Fountain, surrounded by the people who matter most. The setting was elegant, but the defining quality of the day was not the fountain, the wardrobe or even the formal ceremony.

It was authenticity.

After photographing more than 1,300 weddings, I have learned that people rarely need a photographer to turn them into someone more interesting. They need someone experienced enough to recognise what is already extraordinary about them.

That distinction matters well beyond photography.

Strong creative work does not overpower the people it serves. It creates the conditions in which they can be seen clearly, confidently and honestly.

The formal photographs preserve how a wedding looked.

The unguarded ones preserve how it felt.

Which photographs become more valuable to you over time: the beautifully composed portraits or the completely unplanned moments?
