What is Jumping the broom?

Jumping the broom is a wedding tradition with deep roots in Black history. It originated during slavery, when enslaved people were not legally allowed to marry. Because their unions weren’t recognized by law, many developed their own rituals to honor and formalize their commitment to one another.

Here are some symbolic reasons:

"Sweeping away the old and welcoming the new life together."

"The start of a new household and crossing into a new chapter."

Also, in some West African cultures, brooms held spiritual significance and were used in rituals to sweep away evil spirits.
