The First LGBTQIA+ music pioneer highlighted is the innovator, the originator, the emancipator, and the architect of rock ‘n’ roll, Little Richard!
Growing up identifying as gay in a conservative, religious southern preacher household, Little Richard was raised to see homosexualty as sinful. Little Richard was kicked out of his home at a young age and left to start his meteoric rise on his own.
From performer in a traveling drag r***e, to his groundbreaking career as a piano-playing singer who unleashed an exciting new sound onto eager ears, Little Richard became one of the first q***r, black crossover artists to bring white and black people together with his flashy high energy sets and gender bending outfits and style.
Over his life, Little Richard had a history with his deeply religious ties and being gay, something he struggled with until his death, but throughout, openly expressed his struggles and brought a major conflict many openly gay, religious people struggle with to this day.
Beyond his life, he is referenced by many artists over the years as a main inspiration, and was inducted to the rock and roll hall of fame in 1986.
