It’s giving drama. It’s giving elegance. It’s giving passion.

The look of a wedding speaks volumes. It communicates the vibe and lets guests know what type of celebration they’re about to enjoy. More importantly, in the right hands, the look of a wedding can represent the couple and their relationship. That’s the thing about flowers. they can say so much without saying a word.

Flowers tell stories: stories that begin with “And they lived happily ever after.”

We believe weddings should be personal; an event that could only be about the particular couple being celebrated. To achieve that, unique touches are critical. When this gardener got married, we knew exactly what “statement flower” to include in her bouquet.

We’re excited to share this year’s Art in Bloom piece, “Figure of a Lar.”

During the design phase, we bounced several ideas around: literal, historical, symbolical. After some discussion, we realized we could tackle all three at once, that the ideas would complement each other.

First, we have the main botanics representing the figure in the fresco, the lar. A lar is a minor deity responsible for the protection of a particular place and its people. This lar was responsible for protecting a home; you could find other lares in shops, markets, harbors, and similar places.

This fresco is the oldest painting in the museum, dating back to the first century. It’s in such remarkable condition - in part - because it’s spent most of the past two millennia encased in volcanic ash, following the eruption of Mt Vesuvius. We wanted to capture the moment of recovery and rediscovery when the fresco was excavated from Pompeii. The white flowers emulate the ash and rubble of the dig site.

As stated above, a lar is responsible for the protection. In considering that notion, we created these flowers as a love letter to Minneapolis and Minnesota. A close look at the fresco shows the lar holding a chalice with a thin arc of wine coming from it, symbolizing the protection the lar provides. We highlighted that feature with botanics and included the whistle: a further means of providing protection of a place and its people.

Day 8 of our walk through Art in Bloom years past, leading up to this year’s work! The year we did Wedding Chest was an exercise in empathy.

Wedding Chest was used to hold a young bride’s belongings upon moving into her in-laws’ home. As expected judging by the quality and luxuriousness of the chest, the bride and groom came from very wealthy families and the marriage was likely arranged.

Now, we can’t emphasize with an arranged marriage (that’s good); nor can we emphasize with being fabulously wealthy (bummer); we can’t think about the bride empathize with the feelings she must have experienced when she would have used her wedding chest: excitement, anxiety, trepidation.

And that’s what good art does: it facilitates connections between people. It’s a joy to use florals in a way that amplifies those connections.

Art in Bloom concludes today; get on down if you haven’t been yet!

Day 7 of our walk through Art in Bloom years past, leading up to this year’s work!

When we use florals to tell a story about the artwork, texture can be more important than color or shape. This is especially so when the art is monochromatic, like Guerresi’s “Supha”.

When viewing Supha, it is impossible to miss the elegant tranquility radiating from the face in the sculpture. To capture that feeling, we used a single, smooth, orchid contrasted against busy, frilly mums and stock.

Art in Bloom runs through Sunday with extended museum hours. Come see our piece in Gallery 241, across the hall from the base of the fancy stairs.
