On episode 52 of Doc Talk, Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald joined the podcast at SFFILM to discuss his latest film One to One: John & Yoko. The film captures John and Yoko’s relationship in an interesting light, as well as protests over the Vietnam War, political conflict over the emerging women’s rights and gay rights movements, and a sense that the feeling of endless possibility unleashed in the 1960s was quickly dissipating.

Director Robinson Devor and producer Jason Reid also joined the show to discuss their documentary set in the turbulent early ‘70s, Suburban Fury. The central figure in the film is Sara Jane Moore, who attempted to assassinate then-President Gerald Ford in San Francisco in 1975. How did she go from an apparently “ordinary” suburban woman with Republican leanings to FBI informant, tangled up in the effort to track down kidnapped newspaper heiress Patty Hearst? The answers help untangle an entire era fraught with anxiety, desperation, and a paradoxically “idealistic” sense that a bullet, properly aimed, could change history.

On last week’s episode of Doc Talk, we gathered at San Francisco Film Festival (SFFILM) offices for a conversation with Anne Lai, executive director of SFFILM, and the organization’s Director of Programming, Jessie Fairbanks, discussing the state of the documentary film industry as well as SFFILM and Doc Stories’ role supporting the field and the careers of established and emerging filmmakers.

We also spoke with a product of SFFILM’s education programs, young filmmaker Jonah Mosshammer and fellow filmmaker Brennan McGee, directors of the short film Arepas en Bici, which premiered at Doc Stories. What is an arepa, you may ask? If you are Venezuelan you know already, but in the episode of Doc Talk we explore the savory dish, and the sumptuous film from Mosshammer and McGee.

Doc Talk’s John Ridley and Matt Carey and the ticket of ElectionLine’s Dominic Patten and Ted Johnson debate the greatest political documentary of all time on an unprecedented crossover episode.

They also plumb a mystery: why conservatives have such a hard time making a documentary that’s any good. Johnson, who is based in Washington, D.C., shares what Steve Bannon had to tell him on that subject. And Patten, Deadline’s Executive Editor, Legal, Labor & Politics, identifies a possible exception to the rule – a film about a certain GOP presidential candidate who revealed a hidden side of himself in a 2014 documentary.

Our Story

Nō Studios derives from nō 能, the Sino-Japanese root word for "skill" or "talent;" While in English, "No" is a familiar response to artists as they repeatedly confront and conquer it in pursuit of their craft. The desire behind our 40,000 square foot headquarters, is to create a collaborative workspace and social community that offers an environment for artists and art lovers to come together. Our historic building in the heart of the Pabst Brewery Complex, features offices, co-working space, a state-of-the-art screening room, performance stage, café bar, gallery, and rooftop lounge.

We sit at the intersection of two models under one mission: to house tenants active in the Milwaukee arts scene, and to create and foster a vibrant membership community, brought together by socializing with a purpose. Our tenant list reflects the full spectrum of Milwaukee-based arts organizations from academia, non-profit, production, advocacy, and investment. With residency at Nō Studios, tenants receive event hosting privileges to support our membership community.

The pillars of the membership program are accessibility and community. With this in mind, Nō Studios offers multiple participation options and ways to connect. Each membership level grants admittance to any Nō Studios programmed events. Our programming calendar spans music, visual arts, film, spoken word, writing, and dance. The intention is to explore the intersection between these media, elevate underrepresented artists, educate, inspire, and entertain. The calendar will be guided by the community and amplified by our Oscar winning founder, John Ridley.
