THIS WEEK IN MILAN!

Practically Magical Girls Night Out takes over downtown Thursday evening with sales, food trucks, live music, tarot readings and authors. Saturday brings the Pink Anchor Project's Masquerade Ball, and the fire department is holding three Q&A sessions ahead of November's Special Assessment vote.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:

Practically Magical Girls Night Out -- Thursday, October 15 from 5:00 PM, Downtown Milan
Downtown goes a little witchy. Magical sales, special giveaways, 90s nostalgia, food trucks, and a performance by Monroe Midnight Riders. Prize for best dressed, so come as you are or dress for the occasion. Several stops are running their own programming:
- American Legion Post 268, 5-8 PM: permanent jewelry with HRS Customs, The Drunk Witch drink special, Italian sausage with peppers and onions, and DJ Rob. Open to the public.
- Adventure Ink, 6-8 PM: author showcase with horror and speculative fiction writers Ken MacGregor and Jason Garman.
- Old Fire Barn, from 6 PM: intuitive tarot readings from Moon Mama. Three-card spread, $25. Schedule ahead.

Milan Area Fire Special Assessment Q&A Sessions -- Thursday, October 15 at 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Saturday, October 17 at 9:00 AM, Milan Area Fire Department
Three chances to meet your firefighters, see the equipment, and ask questions about the Special Assessment District vote coming up in November. Worth stopping in if you'll be voting on it.

Anchored In Hope: Masquerade Ball -- Saturday, October 17 at 5:00 PM
The Pink Anchor Project's main fundraiser of the year, timed for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A formal masquerade gala with dinner, live entertainment, a silent auction, the Anchors of Elegance designer purse raffle, and the signature Unmask the Moment reveal. Spooky season kicks off in earnest this weekend. The Hack House hosts its fifth annual Fright Night Saturday and the sixth annual Spooktacular Sunday, both free. Tonight the fire department throws open its doors for Fire Prevention Week.

MAFD Fire Prevention Week Open House -- Tuesday, October 6 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Milan Area Fire Department
The fire department's annual open house, with a long list of partners on hand: Milan Police, Huron Valley Ambulance, HART, the Monroe County Sheriff's Mobile Command Unit, the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Dive Team and Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Car, American Red Cross, U-M Car Seat Safety, The Play Station, Milan Public Library, and Hot Rods Motorcycle Awareness. BS Towing is providing a vehicle for an extrication demonstration.

Fright Night at the Hack House -- Saturday, October 10 at 8:00 PM, The Hack House
The fifth annual Fright Night, and by popular demand they're screening SCREAM again. Bonfires, a concession stand, and tarot card readings from Moon Mama LLC, all free. Tarot readings are first come, first served. Movie starts at 8:00 PM and is rated R.

Spooktacular at the Hack House -- Sunday, October 11 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM, The Hack House
The sixth annual Spooktacular from the Milan Area Historical Society. Pizza, popcorn, donuts, and fun. Free community event.

October arrives midweek and brings a couple of milestones with it. Fountain Optometry marks 20 years on Thursday, the Milan Coffee Off returns to Tolan Square Saturday morning, and MSHL is running two dementia-focused programs early in the week.

Milan Coffee Off Presented by First Merchants Bank -- Saturday, October 3 at 8:00 AM, Tolan Square
The Coffee Off is back in downtown Milan. A morning of coffee competition and community fun at Tolan Square. A good excuse to start the weekend downtown.

Fountain Optometry 20th Anniversary Celebration -- Thursday, October 1 at 1:00 PM
Twenty years of eye care in Milan. For this one day only, the office is bringing in hundreds of extra designer frames, including full collections they don't normally carry. Giveaways all afternoon, event-only pricing, refreshments, and a grand prize of a free pair of sunglasses.

Dementia Friends Workshop -- Tuesday, September 29 at 6:00 PM, The Center
A single-session workshop on recognizing the signs of dementia, communicating with people living with it, and simple steps toward a more dementia-friendly community. More than 3,800 people across Michigan have become Dementia Friends. Register at the front desk at MSHL.

A week of useful civic stops mixed with fun events. Meet the Milan Area Schools board candidates Monday night, bring your old tires to the last recycling day of the year Saturday morning, and grab a fresh professional headshot at the Chamber mixer Saturday evening.

MAS School Board Meet the Candidate Forum -- Monday, September 21 at 7:00 PM, Milan High School
Hear from school board candidates Gabe Burdette, Angela Chidester, George Elder IV, Tom Faro, and Michelle Heikka. Each candidate gives a prepared response to five questions, followed by questions submitted by the community. The forum will run 90 to 120 minutes and will be recorded and posted to the Milan Area Schools YouTube channel. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.

Recycle Days: Scrap Tire Day -- Saturday, September 26 from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM, ACE Hardware Parking Lot, 513 W. Main St.
The last organized recycling day of the year in Milan. Tires only. Moving Milan Forward volunteers will be on hand to help. Milan city residents only.

A milestone week -- Milan Theatre Company takes the stage for the very first time with The Tempest, running Thursday through Saturday. A big moment for the arts in Milan. Friday is also loaded with Step Aside at Tolan Square and the annual Chimney Swift count at dusk. A great week to get out.

This is it -- the inaugural production of Milan Theatre Company. Shakespeare's The Tempest: a shipwreck, a magical island, spirits, romance, comedy, and an exiled duke who must choose between revenge and forgiveness. THIS WEEK IN MILAN!

The 28th Annual Relay for Life takes over Wilson Park Saturday, S'mac and Cheese is back at Tolan Square Friday with Unkle Lay Lee's Moonshine All-Stars, and the Toledo Zoo brings extinct animals to life for kids Friday morning. A strong week to close out the summer.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:

28th Annual Relay for Life of Milan -- Saturday, August 15 at Wilson Park
One of Milan's most meaningful community events of the year. Vendor and craft show, food trucks, and activities from noon to 7 PM. The Opening Ceremony honoring cancer survivors kicks off at noon. At 9 PM, the Luminaria Ceremony gathers the community to remember loved ones lost to cancer. To purchase a luminaria, visit RelayForLife.org/MilanMI.

Live from Tolan Square: Unkle Lay Lee's Moonshine All-Stars -- Friday, August 14 at 5:30 PM, Tolan Square
Outlaw country meets punk, funk, rock, jam band, and soul -- with ukulele, fiddle, and colorful storytelling. S'mac and Cheese food truck on site. Free, bring a lawn chair.

Explore Extinct Animals with The Toledo Zoo -- Friday, August 14 at 9:30 AM or 10:40 AM, The Bridge UMC, 8 Park Lane

THIS WEEK IN MILAN!

School is just around the corner, but there's still plenty of summer left. A sweet father-daughter duo takes the Tolan Square stage Friday, Adventure Ink and Pink Shamrocks team up for a creative kids class Wednesday, and the Hack House closes out its Sunday Funday series with a pizza party.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:

Live from Tolan Square: Mike & Maggie -- Friday, August 7 at 5:30 PM, Tolan Square
A father-daughter duo performing acoustic favorites from the 1970s to today, combining vocals, piano, and guitar. Free, bring a lawn chair, and grab food or a drink from a downtown spot in the social district.

Read & Create Kids Class: Adventure Ink & Pink Shamrocks -- Wednesday, August 5 at 2:00 PM, Pink Shamrocks, 28 E. Main St.
Adventure Ink and Pink Shamrocks are teaming up for a kids art and reading class. Melissa from Adventure Ink reads "Ish" by Peter H. Reynolds, then Rita from Pink Shamrocks guides kids through creating a one-of-a-kind art piece inspired by the story. $15 per child, includes the book. Ages 5 and up. Limited to 15 children -- register soon.

August Sunday Funday: Pizza Party -- Sunday, August 9 at 11:00 AM, The Hack House
The final Second Sunday of the season closes out with pizza, popcorn, yard games, and the Hack House Museum. Free and open to the community.
