Welcome to September! A quieter week to ease into fall, with Tolan Square still going strong Friday and a pot roast dinner at the Legion Tuesday night. Enjoy it -- the busy fall calendar is right around the corner.

Live from Tolan Square: Unkle Lay Lee's Moonshine All-Stars -- Friday, September 4 at 5:30 PM, Tolan Square
Outlaw country meets punk, funk, rock, jam band, and soul -- with ukulele, fiddle, and colorful storytelling. One of the summer series favorites is back for the first Friday of fall. Free, bring a lawn chair, and grab food or a drink from a downtown spot.

Tuesday Dinners at the Legion -- Tuesday, September 1 at 6:00 PM, American Legion Post 268
Pot roast dinner with mashed potatoes, veggies, and dessert for a $10 donation. Open to everyone, all families welcome. Presented by the Women's Auxiliary Post 269.

Moon Mama Meditations -- Tuesday, September 1 at 12:30 PM
Guided imagery meditation with Ash Eichner Pendell of Moon Mama LLC. Perfect for beginners and all experience levels. Register at the Milan Seniors for Healthy Living office.

THIS WEEK IN MILAN!

A milestone week -- Milan Theatre Company takes the stage for the very first time with The Tempest, running Thursday through Saturday. A big moment for the arts in Milan. Friday is also loaded with Step Aside at Tolan Square and the annual Chimney Swift count at dusk. A great week to get out.

Milan Theatre Co. Presents: The Tempest -- Thursday, August 27, Friday, August 28, and Saturday, August 29, Dennis McComb Performing Arts Center
This is it -- the inaugural production of Milan Theatre Company. Shakespeare's The Tempest: a shipwreck, a magical island, spirits, romance, comedy, and an exiled duke who must choose between revenge and forgiveness. Designed to be accessible for all ages, whether it's your first Shakespeare or your fiftieth. Children 5 and under are free.

A six-member honky-tonk and classic rock band renowned for killer harmonies and a diverse blend of vocal styles that consistently leaves crowds yelling for more. Free, bring a lawn chair, and grab food or a drink from one of the downtown spots in the social district.

Annual Chimney Swift Count -- Friday, August 28 at 8:00 PM, Milan City Hall Parking Lot
Join Moon Mama's Ash and naturalist John Farmer for the annual Chimney Swift count -- a spectacular aerial show as the birds return to roost at dusk. Bring a camp chair and binoculars if you have them. Insect repellent recommended. Free and open to all.

Local watercolorist Kelly Bortles will be demonstrating her work and answering questions. Refreshments provided, free gift for attendees, and her collection will be available for sale. A relaxed and welcoming way to close out the weekend.

The 28th Annual Relay for Life takes over Wilson Park Saturday, S'mac and Cheese is back at Tolan Square Friday with Unkle Lay Lee's Moonshine All-Stars, and the Toledo Zoo brings extinct animals to life for kids Friday morning. A strong week to close out the summer.

28th Annual Relay for Life of Milan -- Saturday, August 15 at Wilson Park
One of Milan's most meaningful community events of the year. Vendor and craft show, food trucks, and activities from noon to 7 PM. The Opening Ceremony honoring cancer survivors kicks off at noon. At 9 PM, the Luminaria Ceremony gathers the community to remember loved ones lost to cancer. To purchase a luminaria, visit RelayForLife.org/MilanMI.

School is just around the corner, but there's still plenty of summer left. A sweet father-daughter duo takes the Tolan Square stage Friday, Adventure Ink and Pink Shamrocks team up for a creative kids class Wednesday, and the Hack House closes out its Sunday Funday series with a pizza party.

A father-daughter duo performing acoustic favorites from the 1970s to today, combining vocals, piano, and guitar. Free, bring a lawn chair, and grab food or a drink from a downtown spot in the social district.

Read & Create Kids Class: Adventure Ink & Pink Shamrocks -- Wednesday, August 5 at 2:00 PM, Pink Shamrocks, 28 E. Main St.
Adventure Ink and Pink Shamrocks are teaming up for a kids art and reading class. Melissa from Adventure Ink reads "Ish" by Peter H. Reynolds, then Rita from Pink Shamrocks guides kids through creating a one-of-a-kind art piece inspired by the story. $15 per child, includes the book. Ages 5 and up. Limited to 15 children -- register soon.

August Sunday Funday: Pizza Party -- Sunday, August 9 at 11:00 AM, The Hack House

A big weekend to close out July -- the 29th Annual Milan Carfest rolls into Wilson Park Saturday, The Sound of Music runs Thursday through Sunday at Milan High School, and DuPont Phillips bring their acclaimed folk/pop sound to Tolan Square Friday night.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:

29th Annual Milan Carfest -- Saturday, August 1 starting at 9:00 AM, Wilson Park
All makes, models, and years are welcome at this participant-judged car show. Gates open at 9 AM, show kicks off at noon with the National Anthem. Splash pad and play structure for kids, large shaded pavilion, and awards at 3:30 PM. Bring a 10x10 pop-up tent with stakes or weights if you're showing a car.

FGR Dramalums Presents: The Sound of Music -- Thursday through Sunday, Milan High School
This timeless classic runs four nights this week. Thursday July 30 and Friday July 31 at 5:00 PM, Saturday August 1 at 5:00 PM, and Sunday August 2 at 5:00 PM. Tickets: $15 adults, $7 children 18 and under, $40 families, $25 reserved Patron of the Arts.

$30 gets you 7 fat quarters, $5 toward anything from Life Is Sweet bakery, and 6 rounds of bingo with cash prizes. The final round winner takes the entire pot. A new between-round game has also been added. Held in the large classroom space in the back of the shop.

THIS WEEK IN MILAN!

Thursday is absolutely packed -- 3rd Thursday at Tolan Square, Touch a Truck at Wilson Park, cruise night, and an Open Barn Night at Storm Breaker Stables all happening at the same time. And Saturday brings Milan Mini-Con, the Garden Club Garden Walk, and more. One of the busiest weeks of the summer.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:

Live from Tolan Square @ 3rd Thursdays: Unkle Lay Lee's Moonshine All-Stars -- Thursday, July 16 at 5:00 PM, Tolan Square
Outlaw country meets punk, funk, rock, jam band, and soul -- with ukulele, fiddle, and colorful storytelling. Free, bring a lawn chair, and grab food or a drink from one of the downtown spots in the social district.

Milan Mini-Con -- Saturday, July 18 at 10:00 AM, The Bridge and Downtown Milan
Milan's biggest little convention is back! Local artists, vendors, gaming, cosplay, LARPing demos, and a family-friendly cosplay contest spread across downtown and Tolan Square. Inside The Bridge: a game developer room, Super Smash Bros. arcade, sensory room, vendor hall, and a kids dinosaur dig. Admission is $10 at The Bridge. Buy advance tickets at Milan Community Arcade before July 11 for a free pack of Pokemon cards.

Open Barn Night at Storm Breaker Stables -- Thursday, July 16 at 4:30 PM
Tour the property, meet the horses and goats, give treats and pets, learn basic horse safety, and enjoy horseback riding in the indoor arena (250 lb weight limit). Light refreshments provided. All ages welcome, free and open to the public.

The 8th Annual Lavender Harvest Festival at Lavender Lane is this weekend -- one of the most beautiful events of the summer and a can't-miss for the whole family. Plus classic rock in Tolan Square on Friday night.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:
8th Annual Lavender Harvest Festival -- Saturday, July 11 & Sunday, July 12, Lavender Lane Farm, 12040 Plank Rd.
Stroll through more than 10,000 mature lavender plants in peak bloom. U-pick lavender, food trucks, 40+ local artisans, a petting farm, riding ponies, lavender lemonade, and farm bath and body products. Free photo ops (cell phone only). $10 cash admission, children 12 and under free.

IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series -- Thursday, July 9 through Saturday, July 11, Darana Dragway - Milan
Professional-level nitro drag racing comes to Milan for a multi-day competition. Experience the raw power of top fuel nitro racing at one of Michigan's premier dragways.
