I love how flowers bring people together. Earlier this fall, I connected with a kind man named Charlie through our shared love of dahlias. After he finished digging his own tubers for the season, he reached out and generously offered to share the extras he had. He had so many that he didn’t want them to go to waste. After losing all of mine this year, his kindness honestly felt like such a blessing.
The first graphic includes one of the beautiful bouquets Charlie created this summer, and the second is my basement… now stacked with bins full of the tubers he gifted me. Most of them are unmarked, so next year will be full of surprises as they bloom. I can’t wait to see what colors and shapes show up.
For storage, I pack them in plastic bins with vermiculite and keep a monitor in one to watch the temperature and humidity. Some are already divided, and the rest I’ll divide in the spring before planting. Dahlias are a lot of hard work, and the storage isn’t glamorous, but there’s something peaceful about tucking them in for winter and dreaming about what they’ll become.
I’m so grateful for new connections, for generosity, and for the hope of a season full of beauty.
