Jeff brought home these beautiful fuschia pink roses, and I wanted to give them the feeling of having been gathered from a garden.
I tucked them among my chartreuse coleus, soft sage Baptisia, a tiny bit of limelight hydrangea peeking through, and those wonderful baby elephant ears.
All the different shades, shapes and textures of green softened the roses and gave them movement. Now, to me, it feels like a garden.

This arrangement came together slowly—fresh-cut zinnias, basil from the garden, and fountain grass plumes. I thought it was finished, but when I walked by it later, I realized it needed more depth. A few magenta, red, and orange zinnias gave it exactly what it was missing. Sometimes I just need to walk away for a bit before I can see what a design needs. And every flower has its space❤️❤️

A closer look at yesterday’s birthday flowers.
Zinnias, love-in-a-puff and vine from my garden woven through delphinium, stock, Seaholly, queen annes, and gerbera daisies. Loose, romantic and a little wild — my favorite way to design❤️

had been years since I’d been back to Chatham Manor. I lived in Fredericksburg for 15 years, and this beautiful place holds so much history. Jeff had never visited, so I wanted him to experience it—not only to better understand the Battle of Fredericksburg, one of the Civil War’s deadliest battles, but also to see the Rose Garden that inspired my mom’s painting of Chatham, one of his favorite pieces of art in our home.
My mom has lived in Fredericksburg for nearly 40 years, and I’ve treasured her painting of the Chatham Rose Garden for more than 20 years. It has traveled with me through several homes and now hangs in ours. After our visit, we stopped to see Mom and Jim. When I told her we’d just come from Chatham, she smiled and said, “you’ll have to see what’s on my easel.” She was painting the Chatham Gardens again. Neither of us had any idea what the other had been doing that day. We both just laughed. ❤️🌸
