Following the awards ceremony at this year’s Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S , there was the feel of a family reunion in the top 10 when Mia Farley and Invictus finished third and Lauren Nicholson claimed 10th on Landmark’s Jungle Gold, with USEF Chief of Sport David O’Connor celebrating alongside both riders.

The connection between the Holsteiners by Diarado runs deeper than bloodlines. The two were bred at Stonehall Farm (Virginia) and came up through the closely linked programs of Mrs. Jacqueline Mars and David and Karen O’Connor.

‼️ ATTENTION HORSE OWNERS THIS IS IMPORTANT ‼️
This is my second public service announcement in a week. I wish it weren’t necessary, but I’m always willing to share what I’ve learned from 40 years in the horse industry.

There is a new outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) ay the HITS Horse Show in Culpeper, Virginia. It is believed to have originated locally in Waterford VA. This is not about placing blame, the barn involved is known to be vigilant, and this virus can affect even the most careful operations.

The purpose of sharing information is simply to share from personal experience and to keep everyone informed and help prevent further spread.
EHV-1 is extremely contagious!!!Precautions like closing barns to outside traffic are not overreactions, they are smart and necessary.

I experienced this firsthand in 2002, and it’s something you don’t forget. This virus spreads easily,
just one person moving between barns can carry it on their clothes, shoes, or equipment.
For those unfamiliar, EHV-1 often begins with a fever and can escalate quickly. In some cases, it can lead to severe neurological symptoms, including paralysis.

Simple, consistent practices can make a real difference:
• Limit traffic in and out of barns
• Avoid sharing equipment between horses
• Change clothes and disinfect thoroughly between locations
• Take your horse’s temperature daily
Daily temperature monitoring is especially important. Many racetracks require it as standard practice, and it’s something more barns should adopt. Catching a fever early can help prevent further spread.

This isn’t about panic, it’s about awareness and responsibility. Taking precautions now protects not just your horses, but the entire equine community.
Please take this seriously and stay vigilant.

Our staff unfortunately are experts in this and is starts with a fever. We went through this in 2001. Temper changes this time of year triggers stress in horses. We recommend taking temps constantly to make sure and take action when there is a fever. Isolation and limited people in barns is the key.
