New Orleans has neutral grounds, not medians.

Canal Street was built in 1807 at 171 feet wide, the widest street in the country. 50 of those feet were designated for a canal that was never dug.

Tensions between the Old Town Creoles and the newly settled Americans of the Faubourg St. Mary were high, with each living on respective sides of Canal.

The area in the middle of the street symbolized the truce between the opposing groups. It became known as the “neutral ground”.

Eventually all medians in New Orleans became known as neutral grounds.

It’s official official. I got my paperwork today- code of conduct, by-laws, dues & fees. This is such a special and important honor.

I am a Baby Doll in the New Orleans Black masking tradition.

Today I can officially say I will walk in the footsteps of dynamic and courageous Black women who made a stand and started a tradition.
