I create floral arches all the time, but within a client’s vision. However, this arch for Studio House on Malvern art open house, I was able to design an arch for myself, focusing on meaning rather than decoration. One of the themes of the show was portals, symbolizing transition, passing from dark to light. I reflected on the major transitions I am experiencing right now and intentionally chose ingredients not just for their aesthetics but symbolic significance to me. With dark red and brown tones and textures at the entrance transitioning to vibrant colors on the other side. I wanted people passing through to experience the entire work. Failing to appreciate and be mindful of the details of a portal, you miss out on fully experiencing the other side. You must pay attention to all of the work that led you there.
Usually I have to take installations down after an event but I was able to leave this piece up, allowing all the flowers to wilt and fade. The piece took on a whole different significance. Fresh flowers have a limited lifespan, and people often don’t realize that allowing flowers to dry they maintain beauty that can still be appreciated. The whole process was very cathartic .
