This time of year if you are designing with flowers from your garden, one sweet natural way to create stem support is to use hollow stems cut to fill your container. I used some rhubarb stems to fill my glass for a little cup of cheer for a couple peonies.

I love it when neighbors stop to visit when I’m down putting out flowers at my roadside stand. Flowers seem to have a special way of bringing community together for a quick visit.

Iris aren’t a super long lasting cut flower, but if you keep the spent blossoms cleaned up and allow all the buds to bloom you can get about a weeks worth of enjoyment from them. I think they are a beautiful, unique flower with a nice scent. If you have them in your garden, go ahead, cut a stem or two to enjoy in your home.

These tubers originally came from my grandmothers garden. I’ve had them growing here for more than 27 years. They always remind me of her and the walks we’d take through her garden. Now my own grandchild are admiring and appreciating them. Who knows, maybe one day they will want a start from me, and I can pass them on. Perennials are the perfect gift that keeps on giving.

These are at the flower stand waiting to go home with someone.

Pheeww good day digging in the dirt! Peonies are coming on, blackberries are looking good? strawberries are blooming, weeds are thriving, and I left some flowers at the flower stand. Hope they brighten someone’s day.

Diane Maehl, taking these photos tonight, made me think of you. I sure miss you, my friend. I was reminded tonight to get my camera out and use it! I have been lazy, just taking pictures with my phone, and I forgot how many cool effects I can capture with the camera.

In the garden, the peonies, iris, columbine, and allium are really starting to bloom, so there will be some garden bouquets tomorrow at my roadside flower stand.

Designing with local flowers is the best! Wendy McGraw with Almotarose in Colfax, brought me these lovely ranunculus from her flower farm. Perfect for me to add in to my garden goodies this week. I love it when our local flower season begins and every week something new is blooming. This Saturday 5/16, 10am I will be sharing a designing class through Medical Lake Park and Rec Program that focuses on using your home-grown flowers in your homes. Fun and interactive. If you want some guidance and inspiration come join us. Let me know if you need the details.
