One of the greatest joys Garden and Roads has brought me over the past nine years has been meeting extraordinary creative people, and Amy Murgatroyd is truly one of them. I first met Amy in 2018 when she attended one of my floral design classes—back in the carefree, pre-COVID days when we gathered with flowers, wine, and snacks. I’ve been an admirer of her work ever since.
We asked Amy to capture a multigenerational family photoshoot for my mother’s 80th birthday, and the experience—and results—were nothing short of remarkable. Amy has a rare ability to see and preserve the most heartfelt, fleeting moments. The still photographs are stunning on their own, but the video she crafted for us is something beyond words. “Poignant” only begins to describe her artistry.

Amy, thank you for sharing your gift with our family. We will cherish the images and film for years to come.

Forget-me-nots - those tiny blue flowers are one of the last flowers blooming and so appropriate for this sweet sympathy arrangement. I found some peach and pink snapdragons still blooming and added them swipe to see the arrangement after we tucked those in - which one do you like better? Drop a line in the comments.

When a dear friend requests a heart flower spray for her husband’s funeral and, as a sustainable florist who does not use flower foam, you’ve never made one… you figure it out - to honor your friend & her husband who was a wonderful person - husband, uncle, friend and through is career as a golf pro touched so many lives in the tight knit, but expansive golf community.

Materials: cardboard, chicken wire, moss (grown in Western MA). Tender flowers: mums, bells of Ireland, spray roses, thistle, hellebores, clematis, lisianthus, and rice flower. There is a water barrier layer between the wet moss & the cardboard of biodegradable cornstarch based material - in this case a flattened shopping bag. Florals were sprayed with water, covered & and put into a cold environment for 4 hours prior to delivery. Almost all flowers performed well - at 38 hours it was still looking good except the clematis did not last overnight at the funeral home - I removed it before the church service the next day.

The outer heart form is dry moss with statice and limonium that will dry beautifully and in a few days, when the tender flowers are spent, we will remove the cardboard and the inner heart and there will remain a longlasting wreath style heart.

It’s always good to have company for the dirty jobs! We got about half the tubers in the dahlia patch dug up and I’ll go back for the rest this week. I told myself I would take the rest of the afternoon off, but there are a couple hundred tulip bulbs giving me stink eye, so I’m having some hot tea & heading back out.

Killer frost set in last week and our dahlia patch is done for this year. We plan on having a tuber sale this winter and hope to spread the beauty and joy of dahlias around Medford and further afield.

Sad soliloquy from the dahlia patch this morning.

Bold seasonal fall flowers spiked with blue was the request for this Cambridge couple! I love when our Dahlias and Zinnias get to stand in the spotlight, not having to share glory with roses!!🌹

I still bought 650 of them, so we will have a spring CSA, but the rest of 2026, is looking questionable.
