On this Wednesday night of May 7th, we celebrate the year’s work while remembering the fallen. It is with a heavy heart and a pile of blunt pencils that we announce the passing of our Panda, our loyal pencil sharpener, who whirred his final whirr on Monday morning after valiantly choking on a particularly stubborn No. 2. Born in a far away factory and purchased on Amazon, Panda was adopted by the CMS Band shortly after a routine back-to-school shopping spree in July of 2021. From his earliest days, he showed promise—never jamming, never eating too much pencil, and always delivering a satisfyingly perfect point. Panda was more than just a tool. He was a companion. A confidant. A spinning, grinding therapist for anxious measure numberers and dynamic markings. He gave his edge selflessly, never once asking for a break—except when his receptacle was full, and even then, politely. In his prime, Panda sharpened hundreds—nay, thousands—of pencils with the precision of a sushi chef and the determination of a caffeinated woodpecker. He even survived 4 years of endless work, countless concerts, and that one time he was mistaken for a coffee grinder. A small ceremony will be held soon to honor his memory . In lieu of flowers, the Band asks that you simply use a pencil in his honor—and maybe clean out your sharpener every once in a while. Rest in pieces, dear Panda. You gave life a point. Join us in remembrance tonight at McKinney North HS.

While we are sad to see Mr. Mixon go next year, we’re thankful he’ll still be in MISD supporting all of our amazing students!! 🎶

McKinney High School's Royal Pride Band is thrilled to announce that Marshall Mixon will be joining our team as an Associate Band Director for the 2025-2026 school year! We look forward to welcoming him to the Royal Pride Band family and continuing our tradition of excellence.

Next year will mark Mr. Mixon’s fourth year of teaching, all of which have been in McKinney ISD. He began his career at Cockrill Middle School, where he directed the concert band, specialized in woodwind instruction, and played a key role in developing and implementing new curriculum initiatives for the CMS band.

Mr. Mixon graduated Summa Cum Laude in Music Education and Oboe Performance from Texas Tech University. During his time at Texas Tech, Mr. Mixon had the opportunity to be a member of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Lubbock Chamber Orchestra, New Music ensembles, and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Sarah McKoin. He also served as a drum major for the Goin' Band from Raiderland in his last two years.

Mr. Mixon is a professional oboist outside of teaching, and can be found performing with the Lone Star Wind Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Eugene Corporon and Dr. Andrew Trachsel. He also holds professional relations with the Texas Music Educators Association, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, the Theta Kappa chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Society, and the Alpha Omicron chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi - where he served as the Vice President for Membership.

Mr. Mixon lives in McKinney with his wife and daughter. He is coming up on his fourth wedding anniversary this year, and enjoys everything coffee, going to the gym, home projecting, and riding / working on his motorcycle.
