What is the THE GIN GAME?

A dramatic comedy by D.L. Coburn’s 1978 Pulitzer Prize winning drama presented as part of the Matthews Playhouse Community Date Night Theatre Series at Matthews Ballroom in historic downtown Matthews.

In this beautiful piece of literature, a card game is used as a metaphor for life. Weller Martin is playing solitaire on the porch of a seedy nursing home. Enter Fonsia Dorsey, a prim, self-righteous lady. They discover they both dislike the home and enjoy gin rummy, so they begin to play cards and, over time, reveal intimate details of their lives. While Weller’s pride makes him determined to win, Fonsia realizes her rigidity has led to a lonely old age.
