The McGowan House: A Legacy in Bloom 🌷
Our shop is proud to be a part of the historic McGowan House, once home to Tom and Mildred McGowan — two of Marion’s most generous and community-minded residents.
Tom, a World War II veteran and longtime realtor, helped shaped Marion with developments along McGowan Boulevard. He also served on the Marion Chamber of Commerce, YMCA Board, and Salvation Army advisory board. Mildred, remembered for her kindness and dedication, owned Rainbow Real Estate, worked in public service, and was a founding member of the Open Arms group at her church. She also spent over 50 years with the Marion Nature and Garden Club.
Mildred was especially known for her love of gardening. Neighbors often admired her gardens, though her hearing loss meant she rarely caught their compliments. She planted patches of blue flowers so her husband Tom, who was colorblind, could see and enjoy them. Their generosity extended beyond their lifetimes — the McGowan family donated their home to the City of Marion, where it now stands as part of the Uptown Cultural and Entertainment District.
As the next caretakers of this special place, we’re excited to honor that legacy by bringing the gardens back to life and creating a gathering space for community — where flowers, history, and connection all come together. ✨
