Fleurs de Printemps
“A Thomas Joseph floral design is a breath of fresh air that will add grace and charm to any occasion.”
Beautiful flowers and all kinds of leaves (as I used to refer to them growing up) have always been a part of my life. I remember as a kid my mom having me go out into our backyard and water the roses in her garden--pink, white and red, some of them droopy. I liked the droopy ones because they seemed so natural and graceful. I was embarrassed, though, to express my love and passion too openly for these gems of mother nature because I was a boy, and boys were not supposed to dapple in flora--football, baseball, basketball, and running wild on weekends were their standard pastimes. Not mine.
As I matured I was never without flowers in my life--sharing my love for them by giving them as gifts to my mom, aunts and girlfriends; however, education became my primary focus. I wanted to be a college English professor, and I worked hard to achieve that goal, and I cherish my over 40-year career as teacher and college instructor. But now with retirement close on the horizon, I’m preparing for a new career, and that is how Fleurs de Temps (flowering time) was born. Thanks to my wife, Gina, who will end up being the brains behind this small operation, I have a design studio on the lower level of her Harlequin Home Consignment and Antique Shop in Cedar Rapids’ Czech Village.
Located at 76 16th Avenue SW, there, I create designs for all occasions, give demonstrations and workshops upstairs, and on Saturdays during the summer months under a red and white canopy outside sell poppies, sweetpeas, Antigua carnations, garden roses, variegated foilages and as many other blooms as I can get my hands on. How fun does all of that sound? Voila!!
