Nothing else matters if you mess up this relationship. When I saw the picture of a dad and daughter in the dugout with arms around one another, it took me back to so many times that I shared time with our daughters. There were times when I had to be very honest, times they needed a little confidence, times they needed specific information, but mostly I wanted them to know that I absolutely, 100-percent, believed they were going to be incredible.

Our younger daughter, Abby, said, “I think there were several times where I knew you probably knew the odds were very low… (and I did too). but I knew you believed in my ability to work for it, and more than anything, I always knew you were going to do everything within your power to help me. And that was probably the most important part to me.”

Be what she needs. That is different with every kid, and it can be different every day of the week. When softball ends for her, and it does for everyone at some point, all that remains is the relationship that you built along the way.
