Seed collecting today with my little partner 🙂 We saved seeds to store and we spread some out on the ground to grow own their own for next season.

We also made a “flower creation” with our strawflowers together 😊

I gave my garden a little break after the hard frosts recently, but I have to get back at it since the work isn’t yet done for the year!

Over the past few days I’ve been digging up dahlia tubers and gladiolus corms and now they are curing before I store them. I’ve enjoyed letting my daughter help me where she can even if it adds an extra step and more time 😊

Upcoming I will be cutting down all the plants and then spreading compost and leaf mulch over my garden.

Finally, I have 1,000 bulbs to plant so that you all will have beautiful tulips and daffodils to pick from next spring 😁

Remember the beautiful ranunculus blooms from June? Well, today I began processing the corms so that I can save them overwinter and plant them next spring. I’m hoping to have double the amount I had this year so that more of you can enjoy them!

I dug up the corms, washed off the dirt, separated the corms that multiplied off of the original (up to 5 from 1!), and now they are drying enough to be able to store in a cool, dry, dark space until next February or March.

Enjoy the present, but plan for the future! This is wheat that I am growing for fall wheat wreaths.

Of all the beautiful flowers that I put in my bouquets, this is the one I most frequently get questioned on: Bells of Ireland. They love growing in my garden and have happily self-seeded from last year, for the have done far better than what I started from seed this year! Perfect structural interest and filler! What do you think of this unique flower?

I am smitten over ranunculus 😍 they are a specialty flower that takes a lot of care. I started these from corms (like bulbs), pre-sprouted them indoors in their preferred conditions, and planted them out while it was still cool. They then built their root system and now I get 2 weeks of delicate blooms or until the heat puts them into dormancy. Once the foliage has died, I will attempt to dig up the corms and save them over the fall and winter to grow next year.

Which type to you prefer? Open-center or layers and layers of petals? Hot pink or yellow?

Don’t you love green grass?! I do! Except in the garden…

This grass has such a deep and complex root system that you can’t just pull it and you can’t leave any traces or root in the ground. Slowly but steadily I am lifting the soil with a pitchfork and then removing the clumps of roots. Fortunately, the biggest grass problem is only in the new sections, not the whole thing 🥵 but it is still a lot of work. I’m hopeful it’s a big investment for this year’s crop and those to come!

I finished another patch this morning but now I have to stay clean for a dear friend’s wedding tonight!

I heard a soil health expert once say, “if you have healthy soil, you will find a dozen earthworms in one shovel-full of soil.”

When we first established our garden in 2020, I saw 1 earthworm that entire year. Last year, the count went up to 5. This year, I am seeing 1-3 for every large hole I am digging. This is a big deal! Earthworms help my soil health (which leads to plant health) but they also need a good environment to live in. Seeing them so active in my garden bed means that the microbiology in our soil is improving. 🪱

What is your garden soil like?

Better soil, better flowers 🌸

I have to admit, I was very grateful for the cool weekend while I was at work. This kept the tulips that are still in the ground from opening up too quickly.

Nevertheless, I still had over 120 tulips to pick on Sunday evening when I got home 💐💐💐

Let me make a bouquet for you!

Today during naptime I set up the drip irrigation. We didn’t get as much rain as I had hoped for last weekend, so that added urgency to make sure the new transplants get the moisture they need! 🌧
Pictured below are Larkspur transplants that are doing well with the transition!

No freezing temperatures expected in the forecast which means I can plant out my cool hardy flowers/foliage!

Cool-hardy flowers not only tolerate, but actually like cool temperatures and will be unharmed even if they do face light frost!

Today I planted out my second batch of seedlings (the first was my test to see if they would survive until frost cloth during the snow storm—and 90% of them did!!)! Rudbeckia, sweet peas, Nigella, bupleurum, bells of Ireland, lisianthus, foxglove, delphinium, and larkspur. Tomorrow I’ll continue on with snapdragons, calendula, yarrow, and a few others 🤩

This afternoon I “finalized” my garden plan (quotations around finalized because it’s not really finalized until I’m putting it in the ground)! 📝
It involves knowing how much space I have, how many varieties and how much I need of each variety, and how closely I can plant them together.

Can you tell what I have the most space alloted to? 🌻
