Today has been heartbreaking for multiple reasons but primarily because of the loss of our 250+ year old legacy oak tree. To put its age in perspective, our oak tree was already a century old when Abraham Lincoln would travel through Mahomet, staying at the 9 Gal Tavern, on his way to the courthouse in Urbana. It has stood through centuries of change, weathering storms and anchoring the land landscape with its presence. This oak is part of our shared heritage, it provided ecological benefits, beauty, and a tangible connection to our past. It is now gone forever and we cant feel more heartsick about it. Oh and it also fell on our flower shop…so we will be assessing damages and next steps as we try to move forward. Hug your trees my friends!
