AoT is in TOMORROW!! Join us tomorrow at 7pm at and meet our second speaker Tayt Armitage! He will be giving his talk "Stellar Storm Warning! The Severe Weather Forecast for Habitable Worlds" 😱πŸͺπŸŽƒ

Here in the solar system we are fortunate to have a calm sun, whose flares mainly result in a night of good-sight seeing with the auroras. Other solar systems aren’t so lucky, whose stars are so active that they can blow away entire atmospheres. This talk will break down how severe these flares can be, and possible ways life still may survive in such intense environments.

Tayt Armitage is a 3rd year graduate student in astronomy at U.W. Madison. His research focuses on the transport of material and chemistry in terrestrial planet-forming environments. Before starting at UW-Madison, Tayt got his bachelor’s at THE Ohio State University, where he studied eclipsing binary stars and stellar flares. Outside of astronomy he enjoys collecting Lego’s and spending time with his two cats (one of which is old enough to vote) and turtle.

AoT is in TWO DAYS!! Join us on Tuesday October 21st at and meet our first speaker Evan Linck! He will be giving his talk "Dr. Spaceguard or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" πŸ˜±πŸŒŒπŸŽƒ

It came from SPAAAAACE! Asteroids and comets and impactors, oh my! Worried about a world-ending asteroid strike? Fear not, this talk goes over what you (if you have a budget of billions of dollars) can do to prevent humans from going the way of the dinosaurs.

Evan Linck is a Ph.D. candidate in astronomy at UW-Madison. His research focuses on the life cycles of binary stars (stars that form in pairs) and how they can interact with one another. Prior to starting at UW-Madison, Evan worked in space policy at the Science and Technology Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. Evan has a M.S. in astronomy from UW-Madison, a M.A. in science policy from the George Washington University, and a B.S. in physics from Yale University. In his free time he loves to cook, do outdoor activities, and play with his dog Obi.

AoT is TOMORROW! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ We are having our first AoT of the semester at tomorrow 7pm and hear Dr. Sebastian Heinz give his talk "The long arm of black hole justiceβ€”how black holes shape their host galaxies"
πŸͺπŸŒŒπŸ•³

Black holes have a bad rep: They suck and people often think they are invisible. But in reality, black holes fire off brilliant beams of plasma and shine more brightly than anything else in the universe. Then it’s perhaps not surprising that the supermassive black holes that inhabit the center of every self-respecting galaxy have a major influence on how galaxies evolve. I will talk about some of the ways we study this influence and highlight the work done by some of the amazing graduate students at UW–Madison.

Sebastian Heinz is a Professor of Astronomy at UW-Madison. His research interests include high energy astrophysics, black holes and neutron stars, the evolution of galaxies and large scale cosmic structure, and the study of interstellar gas and dust. He joined the UW-Madison in 2006 after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado-Boulder and two postdoctoral fellowships at the Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, Germany and MIT.

AoT is TWO DAYS AWAY! πŸͺπŸŒŒπŸŽ‰ Join us on Tuesday September 16th at 7pm at and hear Dr. Andrew Nine give his talk "An Elemental Tour of the Universe"

Do you have a favorite element? Do you think chemistry is radium deuterium iodine carbon aluminum? In this talk, we will see how elements are produced in stars and uncover the astrophysical origins of the periodic table.

Andrew Nine is a Professor of Physics at UW–Whitewater. Before that he was a visiting professor at Carleton College. Andrew completed his Ph.D. in astronomy at UW–Madison in 2023. His research focuses on stars that extract matter from other stars in a process called mass transfer, and the chemical processes that occur in their outer layers.

This month, AoTMadison is supporting an exciting new annual event β€” Pint of Science Madison (https://pintofscience.us/events/madison) in May!

Join AoTMadison repeat speaker and Astronomy Postdoc Abby Waggoner & UW-Madison Department of Physics Professor Dan Hooper for an evening diving into The Story of Everything on May 20th Gamma Ray Bar on West Main St downtown!

The event requests a $2 fee (which will reserve your spot β€” only 50 available, with standing room beyond that!), but entry to the venue is free.

We’ll be back to our usual AoT event schedule this coming Fall with some new faces at the helm and event support from the awesome new Badger Talks program!

AoT is TOMORROW!!! This Tuesday, we're having guests from coffeeshop astrophysics give their talk "Fine we'll talk about aliens" πŸͺπŸŒŒπŸ‘½Be there at 7pm at and meet one of the speakers for this week Gabe Freedman!

Gabe Freedman is a PhD candidate studying gravitational wave astrophysics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His research focuses on the development of new data analysis techniques for both nanohertz and millihertz gravitational wave experiments. When not stressing about his upcoming graduation, he attempts to unwind by playing the piano or going for a run. Gabe has been repeatedly reaching out to extraterrestrials to solicit help in writing his PhD thesis. Unfortunately, after the fiasco of '13 they are reluctant to do business with him again.

AoT is TWO DAYS AWAY!!! This Tuesday, we're having guests from coffeeshop astrophysics give their talk "Fine we'll talk about aliens" πŸͺπŸŒŒπŸ‘½Be there at 7pm at and meet one of the speakers for this week Amanda Baylor!

Amanda Baylor is a PhD candidate studying physics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. As a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, she performs real-time data analysis searching for gravitational waves from the mergers of black holes and neutron stars. In her free time, she enjoys reading old science fiction stories and caring for her houseplants. Plagued with strange visions of UFOs, Amanda is convinced she was abducted by aliens as a child.

AoT is THREE DAYS AWAY!!! This month, we're having guests from coffeeshop astrophysics give their talk "Fine we'll talk about aliens" πŸͺπŸŒŒ Meet one of the speakers for this week Ronan Humphrey!

Ronan Humphrey is a PhD candidate studying physics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His research interests are in computational astrophysics performing simulations of tidal disruptions of white dwarfs. Outside of physics, Ronan loves baking, sewing, and being outdoors. Deeply traumatized by watching the film Mars Attacks (1996) as a child, Ronan is terrified of aliens and is adamant that they must not exist.
