The Wedding Binder. When Ayden originally sent me 95 pages of carefully curated and meticulously designed wedding information my heart jumped. I was a little overwhelmed in my initial screening of all the information Ayden and Ryan had so thoughtfully and thoroughly prepared for their big day. Being that their engagement was a little over two years, they had lots of time to cover every detail to ensure their celebration was everything they had been dreaming, and they trusted me to pull it off. I’m so glad they did because it was such an incredible day. With an intimate setting for the rehearsal and wedding at Old Sugar Distillery, the guest list consisted of only their closest friends and family. The decorations were perfect, the food was delicious, the dancing was electric, and the smiles were genuine. At one point Ryan came up to me and said “It’s probably not in the binder, but….” and I jokingly cut them off before they could continue, claiming “if it’s not there, I’m not allowed!” But all jokes aside, their organization and planning made the day so perfect and I hope they were able to enjoy their moment together without worrying about any of the little details.

Jori and Jason eloped to Glacier National Park in Montana for their wedding and then opted to have a small celebration with friends and family back in Madison! While their day in Montana looked incredible- the photos they shared had some amazing views!- their day in Madison felt just as special. With a small group of about 40 guests, they celebrated with those closest to them. Complete with delicious cocktails and some of my favorite entertainers from Piano Fondue, I hope this party was exactly what they were hoping for.

Weddings that are not at a traditional venue are always a little more involved. But James, Alex and their families made the day run so smoothly. Current residents of Utah, James and Alex had roots in Madison, but were planning from out of state and I got to be their boots on the ground. They selected a park in Maple Bluff, right on the lake, and it was the perfect September day! In spite of the wind (which probably bothered me more than anyone else as I frantically tried to keep all the decorations on the tables) the weather was fantastic. And the views were incredible. Plus, their deep roots in Madison allowed for them to have the best group of family and friends surrounding them for their celebration. Then, when the time came to clean up, they said to me “here’s a group that wants to help” and literally within 30 minutes, all the linens were off, the tables were broken down, and the chairs were stacked, ready for pick up the next day. At one point I even saw Alex carrying trash and was like “what the heck are you doing?!? Are you really taking out the trash?!” That was just a testament to how incredibly kind, thoughtful and outgoing these two are. It was a joy planning this day with them and honestly, I wish I could work with them (and their families) every weekend.

Well, it’s not often that I make a total fool of myself. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not perfect, but it’s rare that I start event day with my foot in my mouth. This guy in sweats walked into the venue, still had some stubble on his face, and just walked up and asked if we, the vendors, needed any help. I seriously couldn’t place him, so I said, “Remind me again who you are?” AND IT WAS THE FLIPPIN’ GROOM! C’mon Kate. That was bad. And my recovery was weak. But luckily, Corey was super kind about it and shook it off with a smile. Once I got over my own stupidity, I made sure to do my best to give them the best wedding day ever. We watched rain and drizzle come in an out all day, but eventually determined we could have an outdoor ceremony, which was perfect. The guests loved the unique food stations, and everyone ended up back outside after dark to enjoy a nice cool fall night. Thanks for letting me be a part of such a nice fall wedding….and sorry I fumbled so hard. My pregnancy brain was in full force that day.

These two were seriously so much fun. So much fun, that I even said to them, “You guys are doing this thing right. You seemed to have a lot of planning and preparation early on, but today you’re all party.” And they totally agreed. Mike even admitted that they really try not to take anything too seriously in their relationship and they’re all about having a good time. That’s how you do it, folks. Wedding days should be a celebration, and big fun party, to toast your love with the people you care about most. And they certainly did that too. The venue didn’t run out of Miller Lite that night, but I bet they had to place an order soon after. Congratulations, Ellie and Mike! And I hope that every day is just as much fun as your wedding day.

I’m always a little on edge when I go to a new venue. Anxious isn’t the right word, but just hyper aware and prepared for whatever this new place may throw my way. Selmer and Stone is a beautiful venue located in Fort Atkinson and they did a tremendous job. I actually had the opportunity of working with the photographer who also happened to be one of the venue owners, and the day was so wonderful. They had perfect sunny-and-65 weather (which is a miracle in and of itself in September) and the venue was so picturesque. I loved working with them and hope I get the opportunity to go back someday soon!

This week on Things Clients Say That Make Me Nervous:

“We’re want to DIY our flowers.”

Ok, but….Have you really thought about what that might entail? The answer to “should I DIY it?” is never “no, don’t” but if you decide to DIY your flowers, keep in mind that it has to be done a day (or maaaaybe two) before the wedding, during an already busy week with family and friends coming to town, hair and nail appointments, packing bags for the big day or the honeymoon, and answering messages from family or bridal party on what to expect the day of the wedding. That week is already full and then add to it picking up, cleaning, cutting, and arranging flowers? That’s a lot of work and takes a lot more time than you might think. Is it possible? Of course! But how much work do you want to put in? Maybe it’s worth the peace of mind to just have someone else manage that for you and show up with beautiful flowers, already arranged and ready to set out. Then you don’t have to find vases, fill them with water, cut them, take out greenery trash, etc. Just do yourself a favor before you commit to DIY everything and really think about what it looks like. Not only is your time valuable, but sometimes your sanity is worth more than saving a little money.

Erin and Jacob had a very clear vision of what they wanted their day to be: simple yet elegant with lots of fun local color. They had drinks at the ready, an incredible grazing board, and a Wisconsin classic- Babcock ice cream- for dessert. Planning a wedding from another city isn’t always easy, but these two were on top of their game, which made working with them such a pleasure. The night rounded out with some fun dancing, including the Hora, which rounded out a truly wonderful wedding day.
