I’ve been listening to audiobooks while working around 6 hours by myself at the farm…
LETS SEE IF YOU KNOW WHAT BOOK I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO…..
‘Monseigneur, you believe in making use of everything, but this fourth plot is wasted. Salads are more useful than flowers.’ ‘You are wrong,’ replied the bishop. ‘The beautiful is as useful as the useful.’ Then, after a pause, he added: ‘More so, perhaps.’
Okay, do you know????
It’s Les Misérables.
This quote jumped out at me as I was stringing up the lisianthus, as they were sagging from some of that wind that whipped through the farm the other week.
But oh, how true… we need beauty as much as we need salads, and yes, maybe even more.
I have been asked more times than I can count, “Oh, so….you just grow flowers.” If I could put a little wrinkled forehead and deadpan eyes right here, I would.
To some, the work I do has literally no value. They might say to themselves, “If you can’t feed an army. or a table full of little people. What use is it?”
But the truth is a smile on a soldier when he brings flowers to his wife. Or a dinner table with flowers, with the little, dirty faces around it, is the tapestry of life. A woven combination of the reality that beauty must be placed with the practical…As in nature, roses do better when planted with garlic…..
The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life Genesis 2:9
So, I don’t plan to be a Bishop lol, but I do resonate with his view of the importance of beauty and of practicality.
