I just wanted to share something special that we celebrated in my home yesterday. My daughter is a student at Tech. She will be starting her sophomore year in the fall, but she is a junior.
During her junior year of high school, she suffered a concussion playing school volleyball. She was running to save a ball and she slid into a cinderblock wall with her head. We took her out so her brain could heal. 2 1/2 weeks later she was released by the doctors and the trainers. 3 1/2 weeks after that first concussion, she was playing in the state semifinal volleyball game, and one of her teammates plowed into her which caused her to slam her head into the gym floor and it caused another concussion. 20 days after that second concussion, she had a 10 minute grand mal seizure for the first time in her life, in the front seat of my suburban. She went on for over a year having 9 and 10 minute long grand mal seizures, as well as focal and absent seizures and psychological seizures. Her body would look like it was having a grand mal seizure, but if she was hooked up to a monitor, her brain was completely fine. Stress was overwhelming her body and causing these types of seizures.
We of course, were referred to a neurologist here in Lubbock and all he wanted to say was that she had epilepsy. I knew that wasn’t true. I wanted him to talk to me about post concussion syndrome. It was obvious that she had had two back to back concussions and then the seizures began. We were dealing with traumatic brain injuries and I needed to know how to help my daughter‘s brain heal. The third week of her senior year she had gone a few months without having a seizure. Four months to be exact. She was able to drive at this point. She had come home for lunch and she and I visited and she talked to me about being stressed about a test she had to go back to class to take. She got in her vehicle and she drove back to school. I got an alert on my phone from her Apple Watch that she had been in a crash. She had a seizure while driving and she drove off our loop here in Lubbock and totaled her vehicle. The paramedics and the police said it was the worst rollover they had seen in 18 years and she should be dead, but by the grace of God she was not.
During this time, I was desperately looking for some other help as the doctors here were not willing to do anything except throw medicine at her. I found a functional neurologist in Austin who saved and changed our lives.
Yesterday we celebrated 18 months… 1 1/2 years of my girl Ellie, being seizure Free!!!!
Praise God for that incredible milestone! We had no idea if Ellie would ever even be able to go to college after everything her body had gone through with the seizures. It took part of our lives away and it damaged her brain.
I am happy to say that she is thriving and doing extremely well in college. More importantly, she has gotten her independence and her freedom back. Things we once took for granted, we now thank Jesus for every day! Yesterday was a very important and very sweet day in our home!💛💛
