Last week our Landscape Director and Estate Gardener had the privilege of joining in visiting the personal garden of Ozzie Johnson and Lisa Bartlett in Marietta, Georgia!

Ozzie has been a plant collector for decades specializing in bringing Asian varieties of trees and plants from places such as Japan, China, and Vietnam to the States to test in trial nurseries. Lisa is a Louisville native who recently retired as the garden manager of Smith-Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw, Georgia. Together they have created an indelible home garden and our team was lucky enough to be gifted a few ferns to be planted in our Woodland Garden!

Found all throughout our gardens, the Oakleaf Hydrangea gets its name from the similarity of its foliage when compared to Oak trees!

A smaller shrub, these plants can range anywhere from 3-12 feet tall, making them perfect for smaller spaces! As the season progresses, many varieties have their blooms turn from a bright white to a pink flush!

There’s always something to see in our Woodland Garden! This is a Black Staining Polyvore Mushroom! 🍄

Its namesake comes from the black bruising that occurs when it’s damaged. However, this is actually an incredibly edible mushroom! Many recommend using a younger mushroom as it tends to be quite tender once cooked!

Phlox paniculata, or Garden Phlox, are an amazing pollinator attractor! Coming in a variety of colors, they’re a staple in any gardener’s perennial garden!

Native to the eastern coast of the US, they’re often found natively within woodland forests. They’ve grown in popularity over the years, being introduced to parts of Asia, Canada, and Europe!

Hibiscus moscheutos, or Swamp Rose Mallow, are quite the standout amongst plants found in our gardens! No literally, these gorgeous perennials are known to grow to AT LEAST 5 feet tall— some can reach over 10!

Native to the wetlands of the American south, these plants THRIVE on consistently moist soil and humidity. They’re often times used as makeshift screens and hedges on the low spots of garden beds.

You can find ours located on the edge of the Annual Garden or Herbaceous Border Garden!
