Good morning—this is Caroline. I handled the Chef Ellen Gill McCarty / Ellen Gill of Science Hill Inn page.
As you knew and loved, Chef Ellen was her catering company. During COVID, after closing her family restaurant Science Hill Inn due to her ongoing battle with cancer, Ellen started Gill on the Go out of necessity. She cooked every dish herself and personally delivered meals all over town—even as far as Fort Knox. Ellen ALWAYS showed up with strength, a smile, humor, and food that was always made with heart and grit.
Her famous Pimento Cheese became a deeply loved favorite. Crowler Catering is proudly carrying her Pimento Cheese, spending months perfecting it. Ellen always said, “It’s made by me and my love for the dish,” and while it can never be exactly the same, Crowler’s version honors her spirit—it’s incredibly close and incredibly good.
Thank you to Crowler Catering for helping keep Chef Ellen’s legacy—and her love for comfort food—alive.
Ellen is deeply missed.
