Good morning. I woke up wanting to share a reason that helped me decide to open an African American museum in Kentucky. It was my late sister-in-law, Ann Simms Collins. She started dating my brother in the late seventies. At the time, Louisville was in turmoil over desegregating the public schools. But Teddy and Ann prevailed and found love, not hate. They married while he was in medical school and had two beautiful children, Teddy and Natasha. Teddy, their son, graduated from Stanford University and was a member of their golf team. Their daughter, Natasha, was a member of Yale’s School of Medicine class of 2012. She passed away from leukemia on August 12 at the age of 26.

Ann believed the world would become more loving, regardless of color. Families would not have to choose how much to love a different child at the dinner table. Today, I cried so hard that, over thirty years later, we would still be at the table talking about race. She centered her life on it because of the man she loved and their beautiful, successful children.

My deepest sadness is how much she had to defend her love for her family before she passed. In my tears, I seek to say this: Roots 101 aims to heal America’s wounds of hatred and bigotry. We have treated these wounds at Roots 101, and we will always treat them, so we can heal together. Ann Simms Collins’s death must not be in vain. 🤎
