Feeding wedding guests has roots in ancient history, evolving from a display of community, fertility, and social status to the modern, formalized catering industry. The practice of serving food and drink to celebrate a marriage is centuries old, with significant, distinct traditions dating back to Ancient Greece and Rome.

In ancient Rome, The "Bread" Tradition finalized the ceremony by breaking a savory cake (of wheat or barley - called mustaceum) over the bride's head (according to the Food Studies Journal Gastronomica).

This was a symbol for fertility and good fortune for the couple. Guests would, then, scramble for the broken pieces of bread to ensure good luck - marking a very early, communal form of "feeding" the guests.
