πŸ•ŠοΈ When my Uncle passed away many years ago, I remember it being the first time I was really able to comprehend losing a family member and part if that was because I witnessed how emotional my Aunt was at the service. I realized how much she loved him despite them having their issues. He was gone and she was hurting tremendously.

Later that night I was sifting through wedding photos of them while listening to my Dad’s records and eventually the needle dropped on Roberta Flack’s β€œFirst Take” album.

Somebody once described it as, β€œone of those rare albums that has the power to enlighten the emotional content of one’s life. You feel the world differently after listening to it.”

I can def say I am one of those people. I cannot listen to her rendition of β€œThe First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and not be moved. I’m sure we all have songs like that.

Roberta Flack’s voice was like no other and I’m sad to hear she is gone, but I am very grateful to have been impacted by her gift at such an impressionable moment in my life.

His Boxcar Sessions album might be a sneaky rap top 10 for me. It doesn’t sound like anything else except rugged Oakland and he didn’t sound like anybody I had ever heard before. Deep monotone. Unorthodox cadence. Lyrics took unexpected detours. Intelligent, artful, street rap from the golden era. Left Coast af.
