Joe Cooley was one of the first tablists to combine Triplet Tears with Chirps in various ways and popularized these combos back in the day. People often refer to the “Joe Cooley Scratch” as one specific technique, but it’s actually a broader style featuring multiple Chirp>Tear combo variations.

Happy 😻 Here's a lil' scratch routine I created for with his tune "Midnight Lion Walk" to help promote his album "Harmonica Andromeda" when it was released! 🎶⁠
⁠
KSHMR's "Midnight Lion Walk" is an amazing track that's fully composed & melodically complete so that makes it a tricky tune to create a 1-minute scratch routine with because it's already so full. There's not much space for additional instrumentation.⁠
⁠
So to remedy this, I remixed his tune to feature the parts of the song that offered a bit more empty space to work with.⁠
⁠
But even after remixing it, it was still tough to fit the cuts around the existing sounds in a musical way to make them part of the actual composition.⁠
⁠
The most challenging part of creating a scratch routine with "Midnight Lion Walk" is that's it's also super melodic the entire time.⁠
⁠
Luckily, KSHMR provided me with his original production stems of his track so that I could use a few samples from the actual tune.⁠
⁠
(I also used one vocal sample from the Scratch DJ Toolkit which you can download it for FREE here: https://www.ScratchDJToolkit.com )⁠
⁠
However, once the samples are scratched it changes the original key of those samples, so I had to perform my scratch modulations live in key on the fly.⁠
⁠
The challenge is what made the routine so interesting and funnnnn to create!!⁠

Learn the FORWARD STAB scratch in 60 seconds! 🔪

🚦Start Position:
Crossfader → OPEN
Scratch Sample → BEGINNING

🎚️ STEP 1: “Together” OPEN the crossfader and PUSH the sample FORWARD at the same time.

🎚️ STEP 2: “Fader” CLOSE the crossfader.

🎚️ STEP 3: “Record” PULL the sample BACKWARD.

⭐ Your goal is to create ONE sound with the forward motion and cut the fader to mute the backward motion as you pull the sample back.
