I’ll often arrive days before—walking the locations, watching the light, understanding the rhythm of the place, and asking: does this location actually tell their story?

Iconic and touristy backdrops are beautiful. But I’ll always tell my couples: let’s go where it means something to you, not just where it gets likes.

The right attire in the wrong setting—or the right location with an outfit that doesn’t belong—can break the entire visual story.

Golden hour isn’t just beautiful—it’s borrowed.

Every sunset gives us a small window where the light softens, the wind settles, and everything feels a little more honest. It lasts only a few minutes, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

That’s why storytelling doesn’t begin when I press the shutter. It begins long before the wedding day. Scouting locations. Studying how the California sun moves across the landscape. Knowing exactly where the light will fall, so when the moment arrives, my couples don’t have to think about posing—they simply get to be present.

The best photographs aren’t rushed. They’re created by giving space. Space to breathe. Space to laugh. Space to hold each other without interruption. When couples are free to experience the moment instead of perform it, the story naturally unfolds.

There’s a certain expectation when people think of weddings—perfect light, sharp images, everything “beautiful” in the way we’ve been taught to define it.

But out in Joshua Tree, none of that really matters.

The desert doesn’t perform for you. The wind interrupts. The light shifts too fast. Film doesn’t forgive. And maybe that’s the point.

This wasn’t about chasing perfection. It was about choosing presence over polish. Letting moments exist without interrupting them just to make them “look better.”

Grain instead of gloss. Feeling instead of formula.
Because beauty is subjective—but being there isn’t.

Like my good friend and mentor Armand always says:
“Challenge is where art thrives.”

And film, in all its limitations, demands that challenge. It forces you to slow down, to trust, to feel before you shoot.

This is what an intiate wedding looks like when you stop trying to control it—and just live it.
