This week, we’ll be posting joyful images from Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. The air is heavy as we watch the war in Israel, but we smile when we look at these photos and we remember:

Our hearts break as we watch the war in Israel and see graphic images of acts of terror. Understandably, many local families are grappling with how and whether to move forward with lifecycle celebrations this week. Many B’nei Mitzvah families have loved ones in Israel who will not be able to attend. We do not have the perfect answer, but we do believe this:
 
Joy is an act of resistance against those who would silence or extinguish us.
 
It is okay to continue with a celebration. Acknowledge the situation. Maybe this looks like lighting a candle for the victims, saying prayers for peace, leaning on clergy for commentary, or spreading the word on how to make donations to credible organizations who can support those in need.
 
If we stop publicly celebrating Judaism, they win.
