MAKING ROOM: FOR CHANGE IN LIFE’S SEASONS

Life rarely stays the same.

Children grow up. Friendships change. Families evolve. Careers shift. People come into our lives, and sometimes they leave. The things that once filled our days may no longer fit the season we’re in.

And sometimes, hospitality means making room for change.

Making room for what’s new without clinging too tightly to what was.

Making room for new routines, new relationships, new dreams, and even new versions of ourselves.

Change can be uncomfortable. We may not know exactly what the next season will look like, but we can choose to welcome it with an open heart.

Just as we make room at our tables for others, we can make room in our lives for the possibilities that come with each new season.

Don’t be afraid to rearrange the table. There may be something beautiful waiting for the space you create.

MAKING ROOM: FOR DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS

Hospitality isn’t only making room for the easy conversations.

Sometimes, hospitality means making room for the difficult ones, too.

The conversation you’ve been avoiding. The disagreement that needs to be addressed. The hurt that needs to be acknowledged. The topic where you know you don’t see things the same way.

Making room doesn’t mean we have to agree.

It means we’re willing to listen. To ask questions. To speak honestly and respectfully. To give someone the dignity of being heard—even when the conversation is uncomfortable.

Our homes, families, friendships, and communities don’t become stronger by avoiding every difficult conversation. They become stronger when we learn how to have those conversations with grace.

So pull up a chair.

Listen before you respond. Choose curiosity over assumptions. Choose kindness over winning.

Because sometimes making room means making room for a conversation that could change everything.

MAKING ROOM: FOR EVERYONE AT THE TABLE

There’s something beautiful about a table with room for one more.

Hospitality asks us to look beyond our usual circle and notice who might be standing on the outside.

Make room for the new neighbor. The coworker who doesn’t know anyone. The person who came alone. The friend who has been going through a difficult season. The person who doesn’t quite fit into our usual group.

Make room for different ages, different backgrounds, different stories, and different perspectives.

Because hospitality isn’t about setting a perfect table. It’s about creating a place where people feel they belong.

Sometimes the most meaningful invitation is simply:

"Come sit with us."

There may not always be room for everyone at *every* table—but we can choose to be people who keep looking for ways to pull up another chair.

MAKING ROOM: FOR YOUR KIDS’ FRIENDS

One of the simplest ways to practice hospitality at home? Make room for your kids’ friends.

Make your home the place where they know they’re welcome. Where there’s an extra chair at the table, something to eat in the kitchen, and a place to sit and talk.

You don’t have to entertain them. You don’t have to have a perfectly clean house. And you certainly don’t have to plan something elaborate.

Sometimes hospitality looks like saying, “Of course they can come over.”

Because when we make room for the people our children care about, we’re making room for an important part of their world.

Their friends may remember the snacks, the laughter, the late-night conversations, or the comfortable feeling of being welcomed into someone else’s home.

But more importantly, your kids remember that their home was a place where people were welcomed.

Make room at the table. Make room in the conversation. Make room in your life.

Hospitality isn’t always about inviting someone into our home. Sometimes, it’s about making room for someone in our lives.

Make room for grandparents.

Make room for their stories, their traditions, their wisdom, and even the stories you’ve heard a hundred times before. Make room for their place at the table, in the conversation, and in the moments that become family memories.

Call them. Invite them. Ask their opinion. Let the grandchildren spend time with them. Include them in the ordinary moments—not just the holidays and special occasions.

Because making room says, “You still matter here. You still belong here. There is a place for you at our table.”

And sometimes, the greatest gift of hospitality is simply making sure someone knows there will always be a chair for them.

They weren’t on the guest list.

The house isn’t perfectly clean. You didn’t plan a meal. You’re still in your everyday clothes—and suddenly, someone is standing at your door.

What do you do?

Make room.

Hospitality isn’t about having everything prepared perfectly. It’s about being willing to welcome people into our imperfect, ordinary lives.

Put the kettle on. Find something to share. Pull up another chair. And don’t worry about the dishes in the sink.

Your unexpected guest probably isn’t looking at your countertops.

They’re looking for connection.

Some of the sweetest memories are created in the moments we never planned for—the spontaneous visit, the extra place at the table, the conversation that lasted longer than expected.

So the next time someone unexpectedly shows up at your door, remember:

You don’t need a perfect home to offer a warm welcome. You just need to make room.

Family Hospitality

Leave a Little Love Where They'll Find It

Sometimes the smallest surprise can completely change someone's day.

Slip a note into your child's backpack or lunch box. Tuck one into your spouse's briefcase, notebook, or purse. Leave one on the bathroom mirror or beside their coffee.

It doesn't have to be profound. "I'm proud of you." "You've got this." "Can't wait to see you tonight." "You are loved."

Get creative. Hide little notes where they'll discover them when they least expect it.

These tiny reminders may take less than a minute to write, but they communicate something powerful:

"Even when we're apart, I'm thinking about you."

We don't always know what someone is facing during the day. A few handwritten words from someone they love may be exactly the encouragement they needed.

Hospitality isn't always about what we do when we're together.

Sometimes it's how we remind our family they're loved when we're apart.
