🫣This may be an unpopular opinion, but your wedding DJ is NOT automatically your wedding coordinator. 👏🏻

Let me explain. A DJ has a very specific and incredibly important job on your wedding day. They are responsible for the music, announcements, sound equipment, and keeping the reception flowing from an entertainment standpoint. But that does NOT automatically make them responsible for managing your entire wedding timeline.

That is your wedding planner’s job.

Think about it. What happens if your DJ is troubleshooting a sound issue while the ceremony is supposed to begin? What if the pre-ceremony song needs to be changed, but they’re across the venue setting up equipment or trying to lineup a bridal party? What if your photographer is ready for portraits, your caterer is waiting to serve dinner, and your wedding party has no idea where they need to be or what happens next?

Who is managing all those moving pieces?

Your DJ cannot be in five places at once, and they shouldn’t have to be. They SHOULD be in one place… the DJ BOOTH. They have a job to do, just like your photographer, caterer, florist, and every other vendor you hire.

A wedding planner is responsible for overseeing the bigger picture, managing the timeline, communicating with vendors, cueing the wedding party, anticipating potential issues, and making sure everyone knows where they need to be and when.

And here’s where I would encourage couples to use caution. ⚠️

If a DJ tells you, “You don’t need a planner. I’ll just coordinate everything for you!” Or “We offer coordination” — please take a moment to ask questions before assuming you’re covered. 😳

What exactly does their coordination include? Are they managing the entire wedding day(showing up hours before the event to manage vendors), communicating with all vendors starting at 8am, handling unexpected issues, keeping everyone on schedule, and overseeing logistics outside of the DJ booth? Or are they simply making announcements and keeping the reception events moving?

Those are two VERY different responsibilities.

Some DJs may offer legitimate coordination services (although I would still be cautious because that is literally trying to do two jobs at once! Most people can’t handle it, and typically things will slip through the cracks), and every professional’s contract and scope of work will be different. But please make sure you understand exactly what you’re paying for and what responsibilities are actually being covered.

Your DJ and planner SHOULD work together as a team. 🤝 When they do, your wedding day runs so much more smoothly!

But please don’t rely solely on your DJ to coordinate your wedding just because they have a microphone and know what time the next event is supposed to happen.

Knowing the timeline and managing the timeline are two very different things.

You have invested so much time ⏰, money💵, and heart 🩵 into planning your wedding. You deserve to enjoy it instead of worrying about what’s happening behind the scenes.

✨ Hire the DJ for the entertainment. 🎶 Hire the planner for the ex*****on. 🫡 Let each professional do what they do best. ✅

Your wedding day deserves more than hoping everyone can figure it out as they go.
