Live Like Dolly

Hearing of Dolly Parton’s passing devastated us. The board of The Moonshiner’s Ball felt as if the world stopped turning with the news.

We took a moment to recall how impactful she was on many of our lives.

One board member recalled how her ‘Once Upon a Christmas’ Album with Kenny Rogers started off as an ear sore to force Christmas morning celebrations and how it later became a welcome Holiday tradition.

Another remembers their parents dressing up as Kenny and Dolly for Halloween.

The daughter of one checked the mailbox each month searching for their monthly Imagination Library book. Followed by a “Woohoo thank you Dolly!” When a book had arrived.

Another recalls that her foray into bluegrass being their favorite (of course). They saw her headline Merlefest back in 2001 with some of the baddest pickers in the land. She even did a duet with Doc Watson. “Man, I’d kill to have video of that now.”

Any moment in the legacy that is Dolly Parton has immeasurable impact for so many and if anything we want to continue it by Living Like Dolly.

💫🐺 ARTIST PROFILE 🐺💫

At the center of Wolf - The Band is a professor of music education and theory at Western Kentucky University - flutist, teacher and composer, Dr. Melissa Keeling. We’re talking about a genuine innovator on her instrument. She’s performed at Carnegie Hall. Sat as principal flutist with orchestras and ensembles. She literally wrote the book on electrifying the flute; a complete guide to playing with effects. And her flute is custom modified to incorporate a headjoint slide that lets her bend notes like a whammy bar on guitar. Her playing is dazzling and danceable, ranging from the dreamy and mystical to hard-driving rock and roll.

And this is not to say the rest of the band doesn’t slap! The fiddle interplay with the flute is reminiscent of some of the high-flying coordination we’ve seen between Ellie Ruth and Anthony Le of Hot Brown Smackdown. The guitar rips. The keyboard sparkles. The rhythm section rock solid. And their collective musical intelligence allows them to shapeshift sonically from the Talking Heads to Jethro Tull, from prog to jam to funk and EDM. They can improv for days.

It always blows my mind when a new Kentucky band hits my radar fully formed. It’s not something that happens often. Many of you saw them for the first time at Riverside Rendezvous earlier this summer and from what I’ve seen they were the talk of that weekend. I couldn’t have been less surprised.

They’re kicking off the main stage on Saturday, so show up at noon ready to party. This will not be a sleepy set.
