The Commons LNK The Commons is an open community that grows through your participation. We currently do not have space available for events due to the loss of our lease.

THE COMMONS IS:

An open community that grows through your participation. Access to tools, resources, and human energy. A safe and welcoming place where creativity and kindness are encouraged.

The Commons is organized and staffed completely by volunteers and is funded by donations. While recognizing that we live in a generally unsafe worl

Because we run this thing on a consensus model, all policies are up for discussion and revision.

A recent Lincoln Journal Star article mischaracterized the nature of the businesses (including The Commons) that operated in the location taken over by the Transformations thrift store and seemed to endorse the destruction of the spaces there that had been supporting the neighborhood community. Please share a story about what The Commons or the businesses that were shut down meant to you. We're working on a letter to the editor correcting the bias in prioritization of how community spaces are valued and discussed.

Friends and facilitators and attendees: do you need lightly worn to very worn stacking chairs? The Commons moves out of its current space this week and some material stuff (primarily chairs and some books that were not already re-homed) is available to be dispersed into the community. Please message or comment to arrange pick up. MUST BE BY THURSDAY!

We knew this was coming but it's still tough...Just two weeks remaining at the Commons' current location. We're still searching for a suitable location but we will need to close doors at the end of the month until we can get into a new space. We are still taking reservations for the remaining time and will be setting up blocks of time for clearing out and prepping for storage. Thank you for all your support! -CMc

Let's make the next six weeks at The Commons the best ever! If you've been thinking of planning an event, now is the time! If you've been meaning to make it to an event hosted at the Commons, don't miss your chance! (ICYMI, we have this space until the end of August because the new building owners won't let us stay after that. We're working to find a new space to keep the community going and still fundraising to pay for the future costs.)

Thanks to your amazing support, The Commons is still available to host events (like meetings, teaching, or shows) for the very near future (July & August). It's easy -- just submit an event request at http://thecommonslnk.com/ and we will add you to the calendar. Plenty of space on the calendar for your creativity and activism!

Good news! We can stay at our current location at least through the end of July BUT ONLY IF we can raise funds to pay the rent. We stopped fundraising earlier thinking we would need to be out this month so we do not currently have the money we'll need for July. The need for activism, organizing, and community is more apparent than ever, so let's keep this space for it secure ๐Ÿ’—

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS:

As you may have heard, The Commons is experiencing some shifts.

First, our current physical space at 1239 S. 14th St. is in the process of being sold (along with the rest of the building). We don't yet know what the new owner's intentions are for the space or how much they will charge for rent, so we're not sure if we can stay.

Second, our most recent volunteer administrator has moved out of Lincoln. The good news is that over a dozen community members have come together to make sure the next phase of The Commons is amazing.
In order to do that, we'll need your help!

For those of you who've already donated time, energy, and money, THANK YOU SO MUCH! Please consider helping us out to cover July rent/utilities at our current rate (~700) while we explore options for a new space.

You can also help by spreading the word: THE COMMONS LIVES AND IT NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!!
Also, consider attending the next Visioning/Planning meeting at The Commons on June 20th, 6pm.

long live community-supported free space!

Come to The Commons (1239 S 14th) at 7pm on Wednesday 4/18 to learn more about Inclusionary Zoning, TIF restrictions, and Affordable Housing policy! Excellent infographic explaining TIF (Tax Increment Financing) from the zine โ€œWhat Drives Gentrification in Omaha?โ€ presented by Omaha Democratic Socialists of America. @ The Commons LNK

We're less than $800 dollars from being funded through June! If you are one of the dozens of people who have already contributed to our 2018 operating budget, THANK YOU!

If you haven't contributed yet, check out the "Events" tab and scroll through past and upcoming events at The Commons.

We know that many of these community-organized shows, festivals, workshops, and meetings need a free space in order to exist. It's an incredible honor to be that space!

Consider a donation of any amount to join in our collective effort to hold this space and pay the rent, heat, light, and internet bills.

We're also looking for folks who are interested in donating time and energy to keep the space open after our current administrative volunteer moves out of town. Hit us up at [email protected] if you want more info about that!

Our Story

THE COMMONS IS: An open community that grows through your participation. Access to tools, resources, and human energy. A safe and welcoming place where creativity and kindness are encouraged.

The Commons is no longer a physical space. The building at 14th and B- where we hosted events, housed a lending library and various collectively owned equipment, and facilitated connections in our community- was bought by a local landlord in July 2018, and we were informed that our lease would not be renewed. After an initial search for a new location and several community meetings, it was concluded that a comparable replacement with affordable rent (necessary to continue offering the space on a donation only basis) was not available. -------------------------------------------------------- The Commons was organized and staffed completely by volunteers and funded by donations. While recognizing that we live in a generally unsafe world, and that people are at many different levels of education and experience, we committed to cultivating a safer space where many voices could be heard and any incidents could be discussed and processed as a community. Because we ran on a consensus model, all policies were up for discussion and revision. -------------------------------------------------------- Code of Conduct as of June 2016: Please don't use alcohol or other recreational drugs while at The Commons Do engage only in consensual physical contact Be mindful that words may have a different impact than your intent Unwelcome remarks about gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, physical appearance, body size, age, race, or religion will not be tolerated Persons engaging in threats of violence, deliberate intimidation, or sustained disruption of discussion may be asked to disengage or leave The Commons If you have any questions, or experience any troubling behavior, please speak directly with the volunteer onsite (identified by their stick-on name tag), or you may contact us through our website, thecommonslnk.com.
