Social Media Monster (Spoiler Free) Review
a new review of the documentary!
Social Media Monster is a film telling the story about a group of people in a Missouri town who were selected at random by a prolific internet troll.
I was a huge Spielberg/George Lucas fan since Star Wars changed my life. Raiders of the Lost Ark was (and remains) a near perfect film. Seeing it when I was 9 years old and now 52 years old, let me tell you Raiders HOLDS UP WELL.
I will never ever forget seeing this movie the first time. It was May 1984 and I was 12 years old. It was the same day that our family was moving to El Paso, Texas from Wadsworth, Ohio. I walked to the Great Oaks movie theater in Wadsworth, had my $2.50 ready and the box office girl informed me that the ticket prices had been raised to $3.00 THAT DAY. I only had 3 hours before I needed to be back home and in a packed car, so I begged and pleaded and the manager came out. Took my $2.50 and gave me a ticket and said I was going to love the movie.
And I did. Temple of Doom is a vastly underrated movie given the canon. I stand by my original assessment that I wish NO SEQUEL to Raiders had ever been made. Anything else will always have a comparison problem with a near-perfect (if not perfect) film. That said, Temple of Doom serves as the ONLY movie in the series that I genuinely love.
And it's a prequel. You read that right. TEMPLE OF DOOM is a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. The word had not been used to describe a film yet, but RAIDERS takes place in 1936 and TEMPLE OF DOOM takes place in 1935, filmed 3 years later. There are a ton of subtle hints that this movie serves as the motivation why Indy is such a stickler about antiquities.
The other movie trivia bits I can give away are that Dan Akroyd does a cameo at the airport as a British officer and the name of the nightclub is CLUB OBI WAN as an homage to Star Wars. Harrison Ford got a hernia and was flown back to the U.S. so his stunt double did a LOT of shooting of extended action scenes instead of production stopping entirely. And for Harrison's birthday, when he was strapped down for the torture scene, Barbara Streisand herself showed up and whipped him as a joke.
Back to the 12 year old me, I walked home after seeing this movie, so excited to have seen Indiana Jones return, that my imagination lit like a Christmas tree, and eyeing exotic locations for adventures and glory. And in a few days, I was living in El Paso, Texas where adventure, glory, and the horrors of puberty and life in general awaited me. I had to grow up a lot faster than I expected and the ultimate learning experience was finding out the true horrors of real life make those in film pale in comparison.
And on that happy note, rewatch INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM!

This new vlog is very very personal to me. Most of my friends know I have a cyberstalker and that it's pretty scary. Lately he has been working very hard to promote that I am a "racist" and he wants people to act on that. This can have a devastating effect on my life, my career and people around me.

FILMMAKER TECHIE UPDATE -
Today, at long last the RØDE Microphones Wireless Pro setup arrived. Damn. Just amazing. Did some tests with various wireless lavs to make sure all my wireless audio kits are in top shape. Anyone looking for a Rode Go II or Boya 2-mic, 1-receiver setup message me.
I also got to use my brand new DJI Osmo Pocket 3 tonight in a rather unconventional way. I used it as a we**am. And color me SHOCKED how great it looked, even got some depth of field blur on the background, and it focused on close up objects then went back to me, plus the gimbal head moved to follow me as I moved. The color and sharpness even on zoom kinda blew my mind.
The problem with the zoom recording was that I could not use the new mic(s). I had to use the USB-C port to connect to the PC and that's where your RØDE Microphones connect. So I have an EV RE20 with an audio interface, but I failed to check this in my new setup. My voice was distorted to hell. And I did not have the 32-bit Float to record with, so I thought this was an unmitigated disaster.
Being a Beta-Tester for Adobe Premiere Pro has some serious advantages because their new Audio Repair Beta fixed it. Flawlessly. You can't even tell my voice was distorted at all. Sounds like a radio show.
In less than a week, we've filmed over 38 new Vlogs. Got to try out the Z Cam (really impressed and cuts FLAWLESSLY with the Pocket Cinema 6K Pro cameras).
Editing these vlogs for Social Media Monster - documentary series has turned into a machine. I can edit 3-4 of these a day, working them just in between paid work for clients.
The zoom tonight was for a Vlog that I'm editing tomorrow. Will release it as early as Friday. The plan is to release 2-3 vlogs a week for the next several months. The analytics on YouTube are going crazy and I'm not sure why. Getting a ton of views on a few vlogs and it's not from anything I'm doing.
