Strelitzia reginae, commonly known as the bird-of-paradise is a native flower of South Africa. Its scientific name comes from Queen Charlotte who was the Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in Germany. In the 1950's David Austin would come to the realization that the old roses lacked the colors and flowers shapes that newer hybrid roses had. So he set out on a mission to create roses that had the fragrance and beauty of old roses with the color range and flower repeating of the newer hybrid roses. In 1961 he would successfully produce the Constance Spry which was not very well received. However, in 1983 David would introduce the Graham Thomas rose at the Chelsea Flower Show and suddenly his English roses would gain traction. David's English Roses are widely recognized now and have won awards all across the world.
