About Us
"About Us and this crazy busy life we have chosen" 2018 was a tough year for our family. We lost two very important men in February- my dad, Steve Marxen, after a long grueling battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's) and my grandpa, Stan Murdock aka Papa Doc, after a very short illness. Papa Doc was an ISU Extension Agronomist and in retirement he grew, hybridized and registered Daylilies. Dad was a true blood farmer and loved taking care of the soil, cattle and both men loved their family. In reflection, maybe I have been drawn to change my career (of 21 years) due to their constant teaching of taking care of the earth but when the Lenox Flower shop and the Bedford Flower shop came up on the market at the same time, I was drawn to ask my husband, Mike Smith, and my mom, Betty Marxen, if they would join and support me in my new crazy adventure. They both said "YES" but little did I know they both had alterative motives! My mom was planning on retiring from her job of 28 years and was looking at something to do between her traveling events. My husband, who's hobbies of sign making, T Shirt printing and competition "smokin" was looking to expand those hobbies into more serious hobbies. The NAME! The internet domain name Cafe Sign was registered many years ago, Mike and I acquired it in 2012 when my Aunt gave it up. We really haven't done much with the site until now. We have been told because of its age and simple name it will appear and have good searchability when people do an internet search it online. When you add "floral and gifts" the name does describe what we plan to do. We will have a small coffee shop with snacks in each store. We will have a "men's corner" with BBQ gifts, seasonings, rubs, etc. Gifts including signs, flowers and plants, events, classes on floral design and maybe more-time will tell!
We take possession of these stores January 2, 2019. We have plans to remodel so the shops will continue to do business with filling flower and gift orders but will be closed to the public for at least two weeks!
