In 2019 I read a book called The One Thing. It’s a personal development book about focusing on the single most important task instead of constantly trying to juggle everything at once. While I was reading it, though, I kept thinking about my business…not my to-do list.
Spray tanning is my ONE THING.
At the time, most people in this industry believed you had to offer multiple services to be profitable. Lashes, facials, waxing, etc…you were expected to stack things on top of each other to make the numbers work.
And I understood why…because spray tanning is seasonal, and many people still see it as a “special occasion” service instead of a lifestyle. Building a steady, year-round business on that alone felt risky.
I mean…I had my own doubts, too. Who remembers when we did nails for a short stint?
But I also knew something else: if we focused all of our energy on doing one service extremely well…not just the application, but the experience, the education, the consistency, the professionalism…we could create something different. We wouldn’t be trying to be everything. We would be known for one thing, done at a very high level.
That decision shaped everything that came after.
Fast forward seven years, and we’re considered leaders in the sunless industry, right here in Kansas City. We’ve performed more spray tans than anyone else in the area, and I’ve had the privilege of mentoring over a hundred spray tanning professionals across the country and Canada who are also building businesses around a single specialty instead of spreading themselves thin.
For me, this was never just about tans. It was about commitment to a craft, to a standard, and to proving that focus can be more powerful than variety.
I’m incredibly grateful that this city has allowed me to build a business this way and to show that it can be done.
I’d genuinely love to know…what’s the one thing you want to be known for?
