Gloria Estefan desafió a Tommy Mottola por Shakira ¡El resultado fue histórico!

Antes de que Laundry Service se convirtiera en un fenómeno global, Tommy Mottola, entonces presidente de Sony Music, no estaba convencido de que Shakira pudiera triunfar con un álbum completamente en inglés.

Según reveló Gloria Estefan, quien impulsó el proyecto, Mottola le advirtió que el disco fracasaría y que sería su responsabilidad. “Eso va a fallar y será tu culpa”, le dijo el ejecutivo a Estefan, quien no dudó en responder con seguridad: “¡Y si es un éxito será mío también!”.

El álbum, lanzado en 2001, terminó siendo un hito en la carrera de Shakira, con éxitos como Whenever, Wherever y Underneath Your Clothes, que la consolidaron como una estrella internacional.

La apuesta de Gloria Estefan por la colombiana no solo fue acertada, sino que cambió el rumbo de la música latina en el mercado anglosajón. “Shakira tenía todo para triunfar, solo necesitaba la oportunidad”, comentó Estefan en una entrevista años después.
