October Twilight

Smoke curls like a grey cat’s tail
from the chimney pots
above our heads,
the smell of the smouldering
turf fire is aromatic to the soul,
and the stars twinkle a little more
as each Autumn night arrives.

The oak stands proud
n**e to the frosty air
his coat of leaves no more.

The darkness at the end of everything,
fading into the evening shade
a day dissolving into the dusk,
around the street corners
on a Saturday evening.

The domain of the nocturnal,
lantern light lit
Illuminated with a yellow flicker.

We rest within the darker days
as the October of our lives has come.
