This week's photo submissions to the #locallens #ExperienceLakeOrion photo contest. The sunrises and sunsets were gorgeous over the weekend. I hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy some winter fun. The first photo was taken in the morning over looking the marina, there are swans and an ice shanty in the distance. For my entry into this week's #locallens #ExperienceLakeOrion challenge, I decided to take a walk. I started in front of #20frontstreet ,I love the building and found a parking sign stickered with bands and other local businesses. I made my way down past the Lake Orion Art Center and crossed the bridge which is where I was lucky to capture a blue heron just in the #paintcreek below. I walked into Meeks Park and kept walking by the Lake Orion Lumber Mill and captured some of the old buildings in the back along with an old boat on a trailer. I try to capture a different perspective to our town. #localexplorer #documentaryphotography #OaklandCounty

History Fact: Some of the first settlers in Lake Orion were Needham Hemingway, Jesse Decker and Philip Bigler. In 1829 they built a saw mill and dammed up Paint Creek to power it-located near the dam as it exists today by Lapeer Rd. This turned six small lakes with Paint Creek flowing through them into one big lake.
Needham Hemingway later raised the height of the dam in 1837 to 12 feet to power a large grist mill he built below the saw mill. This further enlarged Lake Orion to the size we know today.

I don't usually shoot weddings but I enjoyed capturing these memories of this happy couple's day. I enjoy the posed portraits but it is in the in between moments that I like to capture their personalities and true enjoyment of eachother.

A year ago I turned a hobby into a business and I have enjoyed every minute of it. In additon to photo sessions, I have taken many of my landscape photos and turned them into pieces of art for everyone to enjoy (if you are interested).

I am prepping for a show on October 2nd and I am really excited about these items. If anyone is interested in placing an order let me know. I can use any one of my photos to make these specialty items with the exception of the calendars and decals.

Note: there are 3 styles of calendars: center flip, top flip and a one-pager.

I spent some time at our lake house in the upper peninsula and visited some places that have some history behind them. The plan was to build a railroad that would run from Huron Bay in Lake Superior out to Champion to carry iron ore. The work began in the 1890s and the project cost $2,000,000. The twist was none of it was ever used. There was an opening event with a passenger cruiser at the iron ore dock and the railroad never carried trains on it. Rumor has it that the trains couldn't get up the slopes and the bay wasn't deep enough for the large ships with the iron ore loaded on them.

I took a hike to the Historic Rock Cut and what a unique and beautiful location. There is so much history just in the middle of the woods down some logging roads. The ore dock is a place we have kayaked over for years and are also in awe that this all took place just down from the lake house.

Enjoy this piece of history and adventure as I did.

"The greatest legacy we can leave our children is happy memories" This family's photo adventure took them to Independence Oaks where we enjoyed the beautiful wildflowers, spent some time on the docks, and enjoyed a unique sunset on the lake. We happened to be there on one of the days in July where the sun was hazy from the smoke from wildfires in the west. You can see that this family truly has a good time with each other. We had a great time! The kids proved you are never too old for bubbles! Thanks Eubanks family, it was a fun evening!

Today's adventure brought us to Harbor Beach where we were able to kayak over two shipwrecks. The first was a bit deeper and a little harder to spot but the second one was in about 4' of water and very visible from the surface. We would like to return on a calm, smooth, sunny day to catch an even better look.

A little history about each ship: The Dorcas Pendell (closest to the surface of the two) burned in place on July 6, 1914. The ship was driven ashore during the great storm of 1913 and a fire destroyed it the summer following. She was a (3) mast wooden schooner built in 1884.
The George H. Waud was a schooner built in 1866 and burned in place after running aground in April of 1902. She was stranded and declared a total loss in September of 1878.

Look at this beautiful scene I tried to capture while we were whale watching in the San Juan Islands, I just kept waiting for a whale to pop up right in front of this beautiful backdrop but...we can't control nature nor do we want to. Enjoy this lovely summer scene as I did.
