Yesterday, Royce was sharing some words of wisdom with a young person who needed a little guidance. Drawing from his own experiences, he offered some perspective. As I sat nearby and listened, he said:

"Some people will try to diminish your accomplishments. When you know who you are and how hard you've worked to get where you are, let their jealousy, insecurity, and negativity roll right off of you." 🙌

That made me think...

✨ Imagine being taught to read before you even started school.
✨ Imagine being placed in the gifted program in elementary school because of your outstanding academic achievement.
✨ Imagine earning a perfect score on a state writing exam, and having your work used to teach other students.
✨ Imagine being selected for the Duke University Talent Identification Program for highly gifted students.
✨ Imagine maintaining a perfect academic record in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
✨ Imagine being in the IB Program, the highest level of academic rigor offered and earning Academic Excellence every semester.
✨ Imagine leaving high school weekly, driving to UCF, and spending your free time helping college students with research.
✨ Imagine the time, energy, and dedication required to serve as president and officer of multiple student organizations.
✨ Imagine being named one of FSU's Young Scholars for 2025.
✨ Imagine being the co-founder of your own company.
✨ Imagine never having to wonder how you'd pay for college because your parents planned for it from the beginning.
✨ Imagine being accepted to UF with a Presidential Scholarship, UCF with the Provost Scholarship, the University of Michigan with a substantial merit award and direct admission to Computer Science, UIUC with a generous merit scholarship, Purdue University, Cornell University(Ivy), UPenn(Ivy), and Brown University(Ivy). We allowed him to choose the school best for him.

Imagine working so hard to reach a goal like Stanford. Now imagine someone undermining your hard work by saying you got into Stanford based on your skin color.🤦🏽‍♀️

His success is undeniable, and he knows exactly how much hard work, sacrifice, and dedication went into every achievement. What he's achieved cannot be diminished; he earned every bit of it. Nice try though. Don’t wake the mama bear. She’s a completely different beast! 🐻🤫✌️

On October 2, 2017, Royce was 9 and Reese was 6. I gave them each a poster board, magazines, scissors, foam letters, scrapbook stickers and glue with one instruction: tell me who you are, what you’re great at, and who you will become.

Both boards still hang in the hallway across from their bedrooms exactly as they made them. I pass them every day without much thought, but today I stopped at Royce’s board and one quote grabbed me:

“If you never try, you’ll never know the possibilities.”

When Royce started applying to colleges, we had honest conversations about cost. After running the numbers for every school on his list, Stanford was #21 out of 22 for affordability. The cost was far beyond what felt reasonable or affordable. At nearly $100,000 a year, I made it clear that unless something changed, he’d be staying in-state for free. He understood, but still asked, “Can I apply anyway?” I said yes.

If he had never tried, he would have never known what was possible. I know it was nothing but God’s Grace and Favor and I’m never going to take that away from Him.❤️ To my elementary parents, allow them to dream Big early!

Let me shout-out the parents and community partners who help make these events possible. As someone who has always believed in celebrating my children’s accomplishments, I know firsthand that these moments become lasting core memories tied to confidence, belonging, and achievement. Reese and Royce are in high school and soon to be college and I still celebrate every lil moment because it matters💛

End-of-year celebrations mark an important transition academically, socially, and emotionally. They give students the opportunity to be recognized for how much they’ve learned and matured over the years, helping build confidence as they prepare for a bigger and more demanding environment. These celebrations also provide a sense of closure as students say goodbye to teachers, classmates, routines, and memories in a positive and meaningful way instead of feeling abruptly disconnected.

I know when my own children feel celebrated, they step into the next chapter with confidence. These moments reinforce the idea that hard work and participation matter, not just grades.

Thank you, Wilson Elementary, for supporting your students in such a big way. Watching you all joyfully put this together gave me so much pride as a mother.❤️
