The other day, I fought a dragon. Well to be honest with you it wasn’t just one dragon. It was two.
I stood side by side with one of the most important people in the world to me, my son.
My little boy is obsessed with swords. He has a small wooden one we bought for him, a knight’s helmet gifted by his uncle, and a cape with a handmade sheath sewn by my wife. When he puts on that costume, he feels like the bravest person in the world.
The other day, he asked me, “Daddy, do you want to go fight some dragons with me?”
He asks me things like this pretty often. And to be honest with you, a lot of times I turn him down. I say I’m busy or I can’t right now.
But this time I said, “Of course. Let’s go.”
He handed me my wooden sword, held his own tightly, and together we crept down the hallway, swords raised, ready to face the dragons.
We flung open the doors and there they were tall and proud.
We charged, yelling and slashing, battling with all our might. We fought until, finally, we struck their hearts and brought them down.
That day, my son gave me a very special gift an opportunity I could’ve easily missed.
I believe every day we’re given chances to do something extraordinary. Sometimes those things are small and simple, done with great love. Other times, we’re given the chance to change someone’s life, to lend a listening ear, to serve someone in need, or to show love in a way that really matters.
Keep your eyes and ears open. Because who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll get the chance to slay a dragon too.
