SEAN SHAFFER RUNS THE TABLE IN 1ST EAST / WEST CLASH!!
In the first of its kind format, 32 of the best racers from both halves of the country came together at the Southwest Showdown last night and put on a show. With the layout of how this race was developed, there was a number of different ways this could go, and the ways it could end. Team Captains Ryan Gleghorn and Bill Kidd did a great job orchestrating the round pairings and run order and strategically having to play a little poker in order to stay in contention. Although, it was discussed during development, no one saw what happened last night coming.
Sean Shaffer set out on the day having had the discussion that “someone could have to potentially run 10+ laps to make this happen.” When the dust settled at 10:15 last night, that is exactly what went down!!
In the 1st Round, the East jumped into control with a 10-6 lead, giving them a strong start to impose on the west. 2nd Round the East stretched their dominance by going 4-2 and leaving the West with Shaffer and Kris Whitfield.
With 4 racers in the “bullpen” from the previous round, the East elected to send Talon Farmer up against Whitfield and took the opening pair in a heads up dial of 4.71. Both drivers were .00, but Farmer orchestrated the finishline perfectly in the double breakout. With their last horse in the trailer, Shaffer was able to advance when Colby Fuller turned it .001 Red.
With 7 drivers remaining in play for the East, Shaffer went on a run. In Round 4, he laid down .008 Total over Bode Bennet.
Round 5 saw Shaffer squared up with Noah Lewis and after being basically even on the tree, Shaffer managed the finish line to be one above, while Lewis broke out by only .004.
Round 6, the East elected to go with Caden Meuth who had .011 out the gate being .005 but was further under in the double breakout affair giving Sean the opportunity to come back yet again.
In Round 7, Jayden Lawler was the next up to challenge Shaffer but missed the tree and Shaffer took advantage gate to finish being .004 and 1 above.
Next up in Round 8, Shaffer got moved into the left lane and a meeting with Tyler Bohannon in the 6.25 Dialed Door Car. Shaffer again let go .004 behind Bohannon’s .007 Red and took the win light.
With 2 left, East Coast rolled Lucas Walker into the water in Round 9 against Shaffer and again, Sean capitalized on the tree and outlasted Walker at the stripe.
In the final, after Shaffer has now made 9 runs at the East, Gleghorns Team had Talon Farmer as their closer rolling into the Final Round. With everything on the line, Shaffer again had the advantage on the starting line and crossed second with Farmer being .001 under, his 3 above go it done.
With Shaffer’s Win, he Claimed the $16,000 Purse and brought the team title to the West.
HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Sean and big THANK YOU to the 32 Drivers that took a chance on a non traditional first time opportunity! The talent pool in that group was insane and we look forward to watching them get after it with all the other talent on property the remainder of the weekend
