I think German chamomile might officially be my new favorite crop. Between the cheerful little blooms, the delicate texture, and the fresh scent of green apples drifting through the field, it’s hard not to fall in love with it. As both an herb and a cut flower, it brings so much beauty and usefulness into the garden and the shop.

This week’s harvest heading to the Missouri Flower Exchange hub in Columbia includes airy white orlaya, cheerful bachelor’s buttons, and fragrant German chamomile.

There is something special about gathering flowers in the early morning while the fields are still cool and quiet.

Locally grown flowers carry the season with them, and this harvest feels like spring in every bucket.

Bachelor’s buttons, delicate orlaya, and waves of German chamomile dancing in the breeze.

Days like this make the flower rows feel almost storybook-like.

Every bloom out here started as a tiny seed, and now the field is beginning to come alive with color and movement.

After searching high and low, our spray delphinium seed has finally arrived and it was worth the wait. 🩵

Meet Delphinium ā€˜Cheer Blue’ F1. A Siberian larkspur type with branching stems and clouds of soft blue blooms. More heat tolerant than the classic tall delphinium and easy to grow from seed, which makes this one especially exciting for our Missouri summers.

These tiny seeds will be sown soon for this season’s production. Tucked into soil. Covered in darkness for germination. Then carefully grown on cool so they can give us those airy, romantic stems we all love in bouquets.

There is something sacred about holding a packet like this and imagining the field in bloom.

From seeds to armfuls of blue.

If all goes well, you will be seeing ā€˜Cheer Blue’ dancing through arrangements later this season.

Tell me… do you love delphinium in soft sky blue or deep moody blue best?
