Join us every Tuesday from 10 am to 12 pm for a fantastic, FREE experience designed for babies through Pre-K, but all ages are welcome! 🧒👶 This new program has a wonderful STEAM focus (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics), perfect for fostering your child's curiosity and a love for learning. We're also emphasizing crucial skills for school readiness, as well as essential social and emotional development, all in a fun, train-themed setting. 🚂 Train Trivia!

What is the name of this structure?

During the steam locomotive era, these massive structures were built straddling or alongside railroad tracks to rapidly refuel tender cars with coal from above using gravity chute mechanisms. Many of these reinforced concrete towers still stand today along rail lines because they were simply too solid and expensive to safely demolish after steam locomotives were phased out in favor of diesels!

🚂 A Piece of Presidential History! 🇺🇸

​Take a look at this framed memory featuring President Ronald Reagan during his "Heartland Whistle Stop" tour!

​On Friday, October 12, 1984, President Reagan spoke to crowds from the rear platform of the famous U.S. No. 1 railroad car, The Ferdinand Magellan. Built originally for presidential travel in 1942, this historic train car served as a mobile stage for classic whistle-stop campaign addresses across the American heartland.

​Shown alongside the original V.I.P. Pass for the Amtrak station event in Ottawa, Ohio, this collectible captures a classic moment in 1980s American political history.

​Ernie's Lil Preschool (Babies–PreK): Tuesdays, 10 AM–12 PM. Interactive play to boost creativity and social skills!

​Reading by the Rails (Babies–PreK): 2nd & 4th Fridays, 10 AM–11 AM. Storytime to spark imagination!

​Monday Modelers (Ages 8+): Mondays (except 2nd of the month), 6:30 PM–8:30 PM. Discover model train engineering!

🔊 SOUND ON! The sound in this video truly captures the power of Big Boy, an appropriate name for this engine!

Big Boy history and why 4014 was chosen to be restored over similar models....

After it was retired from regular service it went on display in Ponoma, CA. There are several other identical Big Boys around the country on display, the closest being 4006 at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis. 4014 was in the best condition, mainly boilers, to be restored.

Footage captured by the nephew of our Board Chair, Ken Hoff, while the 4014 travelled through central Illinois.

​Art plays a key role in S.T.E.A.M. by bridging design, math, and geometry through patterns and symmetry. Inspired by artist Jen Stark and her iconic psychedelic "drip" technique, kids will explore how organic forms connect to mathematical principles through colorful visual design.
