Today we remember Lt. Joseph “Joey D” DiBernardo, FDNY Rescue 3
“Brothers on the roof, you’re going to need to send a rope over the side!”
Those were Lt. Joey D’s words on Black Sunday, a tragic day for the FDNY where two separate fires took the lives of 4 men.
Trapped with zero visibility, no hose line, and fire cutting off every exit, Joey D used his own body as an anchor to lower a fellow firefighter from a fourth-story window. He saved a brother’s life in the final minutes before the room flashed and they were forced to jump.
Joey D survived the fall but lived the rest of his life battling the injuries that ultimately claimed him in 2011. Instead of giving in, he turned tragedy into a mission; fighting for personal escape systems and training that have since protected thousands of firefighters across the country. 🎗️
A hero to the very end. A legacy that still saves lives ❤️🔥⚔️
